Clients do 2.5 hours a day of workplace-centred literacy and numeracy activities during their stay at Venndale.

Mike is adopting an activity-based approach to fire up the interest of the clients.  He is hoping the clients will see more relevance in their reading, writing and numeracy tasks than they do in the classroom, when it is anchored in hands on activities.

The first activity was woomera (Aboriginal wooden spear-throwing device) and spear making using recycled pallet timber for woomeras and then bamboo and silica for the spears.  The aim is to make and then give to a younger family member.

Whilst making, we also looked at jigsaw safety, hand tool use, measuring, describing, technical drawing and then a poster-style report.

Some of the clients had a competition to hit the Rock Wallaby.  The best of ten shots won a meat pie and can of cola.

Work Mates’ Camden Overcomes Barriers to Find Work https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/overcoming-barriers-through-work-mates-program/ Mon, 18 Sep 2023 05:46:25 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=28790 When Camden first came to STEPS at Aitkenvale, he was very introverted and shy. His autism diagnosis poses daily challenges, with social anxiety as his biggest barrier he faces when trying to obtain employment or participate in community events.

But Camden was not going to let anything stand in his way of achieving his goals: to get his Provisional driving plates and his Responsible Service of Alcohol.

When he reached out to STEPS Employment Solutions, Camden was paired with Job Readiness Trainer Tony Doosjen to help him work towards completing his goals. In less than a year Camden has gone from struggling verbally to increased confidence to the point where he can sit and chat with a stranger.

Since being with STEPS Camden has completed his R.S.A. This month Camden successfully obtained his P plates on his first attempt and has transport independence. His confidence continues to grow.

Camden is now working with his dedicated Job Readiness Trainer Tony to achieve new goals of employment and financial independence. He has been with Work Mates for nine months, and is now ready to try some work experience in a retail shop. He says he would love to work in a bottle shop or a drive-through.

Overcoming barriers to achieve employment and purpose https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/overcoming-barriers-to-achieve-employment-and-purpose/ Mon, 28 Aug 2023 05:32:11 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=28289 A success story from Aikenvale, QLD

In May 2023 Graham Hanson was referred to STEPS Aitkenvale by the MIRT unit at the Kirwan Health Campus.

Graham was long term unemployed and struggled to gain meaningful employment due to psychological barriers.

During his initial appointment with STEPS, Graham advised staff that he lacked self-confidence and self-esteem, but was very keen and motivated to get back into the workforce. To him, having a job would give him back a sense of purpose.

Since commencing with STEPS, Graham’s dedicated Job Coach Evan Ah Wing has supported him with reviewing and creating his resume, challenging him with conversations around building self-esteem and confidence, as well as setting motivational talks during and between appointments.

Graham Hanson finds meaningful employment with the support of STEPS staff at Aitkenvale, QLD.

Evan leveraged his teammates in the Aitkenvale office and collaboratively they agreed that a trolley collector role with MSN Enterprises, a regular employer of STEPS Group, would be suitable. Graham had previously expressed his interest of doing trolley work. Evan promptly contacted MSN and a position was job carved for an 8-hour benchmark.

Evan has since organised and supported Graham to fill in his application pack, complete a police check and become familiar with log-in apps and other documentation which Graham was at first unsure about but is excited to be offered the opportunity for.

In July 2023, Graham started his employment with MSN at Kmart Aitkenvale as a Trolley Collector and has been going very well since. Evan has provided on-the-job support with Graham for his first three shifts until he built his confidence with the sign-in, sign-out procedures and the job at hand. Graham is very confident at his new role that he now enjoys.

He thanked STEPS for giving him the opportunity and says he couldn’t believe how quick it has taken STEPS to get him back on his feet in employment.

Graham receives post-placement-support on a weekly basis to ensure his new role is both suitable and sustainable, and STEPS continue to work closely with MSN to create further opportunities for our customers.

‘Roasting’ to new beginnings https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/roasting-to-new-beginnings/ Thu, 25 Nov 2021 05:12:14 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=24103 After overcoming his battle with mental health, Stefan has found himself at home brewing coffee in Buddina.

Stefan has come a long way since linking up with STEPS Employment Solutions five months ago, leaving behind his three years of work as an apprentice carpenter.

Turning to STEPS to help create a new career path, Stefan was keen to learn how to make coffee.

After completing a short barista course and gaining some experience through volunteer work, Stefan secured a paid position as a barista with endED Espresso in Buddina.

He’s also putting his talents with a guitar to good use, playing live music for customers at the café.

endED was originally set up in 2015 to support those struggling with an eating disorder. Owners Mark and Gay Forbes also lay claim to building Australia’s first live-in eating disorder residential facility, Wandi Nerida, which is now run by the Butterfly Foundation in Mooloolah Valley. Mark and Gay have since moved on to establish the endED House of Hope, Australia’s first eating disorder transitional support house located at Woombye.

endED’s foundation is built on compassion, connection and community, something that has been exemplified through their work with Stefan.

The endED Espresso Bar was this year established to create a safe, supportive work environment for people journeying the ED world and related mental illnesses.

Moving forward, Stefan now has the option to potentially be trained into management.

Veterans’ Health Week: The importance of reconnecting https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/veterans-health-week-the-importance-of-reconnecting/ Mon, 26 Oct 2020 00:49:30 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=21341 In a time of increasing social disconnect, those who were already vulnerable to isolation are having an especially difficult time.

As we move into Veterans’ Health Week, our focus shifts to the challenges and barriers that returned service men and women have when trying to reintegrate with society. Whether this is mental or physical disconnect, reaching out to those who may be isolated in the veteran community is of paramount importance.

This year’s theme is “Social Connection”, and events will be held from Saturday the 24th of October until Sunday the 1st of November to highlight these issues.

One of the largest barriers to reintegration and connection can be the transition from service to everyday employment, and with the current job shortage, the process can become overwhelming.

STEPS is excited to offer its support through its new Young Veterans Support Program. A service specialised for veterans aged between 19 – 29 years old who are looking for work, the program offers tailored and FREE job search support so that veterans can find a job that they love.

The program’s consultants are experienced in providing employment support for young, returned service men and women and can assist in finding desirable, job ready assets.

Whether it is assistance identifying career pathways, helping to write an eye-catching resume, or helping with interview techniques, STEPS’ Young Veterans Program is here to help.

This project received grant funding the Australian Government

6 tips to improve mental health https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/6-tips-to-improve-mental-health/ Thu, 15 Oct 2020 02:20:37 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=21221 Maintaining our mental health and wellbeing has been challenging in 2020, so taking the time to consider it is more important than ever.

It’s Queensland Mental Health Week from 10 – 18 October and this year’s theme is take time for mental health.

Let’s make our mental health a priority, here are six things we can do now to improve our mental health and wellbeing.

Eat right

How’s my nutrition? Eating well plays an important role in our mental health, be sure to get enough nutrients and minerals by eating a range of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and sources of dairy.

Don’t know where to start? The University of Newcastle’s Healthy Eating Quiz may help, it’s a 10-minute quiz designed to help rate our eating habits and identify areas where you can improve.

Keep up the exercise

Am I exercising enough? This is an important one and sometimes it’s often the first thing to be overlooked when we are busy and overworked.

For adults aged between 18 and 64, the World Health Organization recommends at least 150 minutes of exercise per week.

If you are looking for ways to get your fitness on track, get moving with these easy workouts.

Get enough sleep

Am I getting enough sleep? Our sleep patterns can impact how we feel and function throughout the day.

Sleep needs vary from person to person; however The Sleep Health Foundation recommends between seven and nine hours for an adult.

Get a better night’s sleep with these healthy sleep habits.

Be mindful

Can I make more time for mindfulness? Mindfulness is the practice of being in the moment and directing your mind and attention to the activity.

Practicing mindfulness can help reduce stress, improve concentration, memory, focus and much more.

See what the fuss is about with this free mindfulness app Smiling Mind.

Created by psychologists and educators, this app has daily meditation and mindfulness exercises and only takes 10 minutes a day.

Connect and socialise

When is the last time I caught up with friends? If it’s been a while, schedule in some time with friends.

Having someone to talk to is a great support and an instant mood booster.

Accept help

Can I ask and accept help? We can’t do everything all the time, it’s important that we ask for help when we need it.

For some of us that can be a hard thing to do but reaching out to friends and family for support when we need is important.

Qld Mental Health Week: Take the Time for Mental Health https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/qld-mental-health-week-take-the-time-for-mental-health/ Fri, 09 Oct 2020 05:30:50 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=21174 This is the week the State of Queensland shines a spotlight on mental health and wellbeing.

At STEPS, we see this week as an opportunity to take a closer look at individual and community mental health and to open up the conversation with the community we support, to ensure the services we provide are giving the most benefit and the most potential for personal empowerment.

The theme for this year’s Qld Mental Health Week is Take time — for mental health.

It’s a good reminder about the importance of taking time out from our busy and complicated lives to do some of the things that boost our mental wellbeing. It’s also a reminder to take the time to have conversations about mental health in our workplaces and communities to help break down the stigma that can be associated with mental illness.

One in five Australians will suffer from mental health issues at least once in their lives. This week’s focus comes back to all of us needing to ‘take time’ to care for our mental wellness. What was once a misunderstood and feared subject, is now an everyday reality for many people.

STEPS Community Services coordinates several projects and recreational activities aimed at improving the well-being of people dealing with mental illness, including those with severe and persistent mental illness. Classes such as art and music are offered along with social gatherings, camping, fishing, and bushwalking.

STEPS also runs social enterprise ventures which offer a space for individuals to socialise, learn new skills, and gain valuable work experience. STEPS Commercial Cleaning and Car Cleaning run as businesses to give people with mental illness rewarding and flexible employment opportunities.

Finding work can be difficult, especially when you are feeling stressed, anxious, or depressed, but getting a job often plays a pivotal role in the journey to mental well-being.

STEPS Employment Solutions is a specialised employment service that helps people mentally prepare for work, find a job that’s right for them, and provides ongoing support to facilitate long-term success.

If you or someone you know are looking for mental health support, please contact STEPS by phoning (07) 5458 3000. For help finding work, phone STEPS Employment Solutions on 1300 078 377.

This Qld Mental Health Week, we’ love to hear from you. If you want to add to the conversation about individual or community health, please email us your thoughts at enquiries@stepsgroup.com.au

And don’t forget – take time!

Specialised Service Makes STEPS Employment Solutions a Standout https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/specialised-service-makes-steps-employment-solutions-a-standout/ https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/specialised-service-makes-steps-employment-solutions-a-standout/#respond Fri, 21 Feb 2020 03:28:04 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=18894 STEPS Employment Solutions liaises with local employers and people looking for work across Australia to match the right skills to the right job, every time.

Specialising in supporting recruitment for people with injury, illness and disability, the team at STEPS Employment Solutions has a broad range of experience, skills and qualifications to suit the needs of almost every industry.

STEPS Employment Solutions manager Liza Brock says what makes them different is the individualised service they provide to both employers and jobseekers.

“We take the time to get to know our clients, providing jobseekers with one on one support and matching them with employment in areas in which they have the skills to succeed,” Liza said.

“Working with a broad range of businesses to provide free recruitment service is a win-win situation because we not only find the best fit staff for the business, we really get to know and work closely with businesses to provide the best possible recruitment solutions.

“And, we offer ongoing support to make sure candidates are meeting objectives and expectations.”

STEPS also provides a specialised mental health program in Bundaberg which aims to support and empower individuals, reduce stigma and skill workforces to better support people with a mental illness.

“STEPS helps to break down barriers for people with mental illness through our close work with local businesses and strategic partnerships with community organisations and government,” Liza said.

While finding work can be difficult generally, Liza says it can be especially difficult when the job seeker feels stressed, anxious or depressed.

“Finding employment can play a pivotal role in mental wellbeing, which is why STEPS Employment Solutions offers tailored support and advice to assist clients with their career pathways and provides on-the-job support to ensure the best outcome for both the employer and employee,” she said.

While the benefits for jobseekers with a disability to find gainful employment may initially be more obvious, the message STEPS is sending loud and clear is that the benefits work both ways.

“Studies show that people with a disability take fewer days off, take less sick leave and stay in jobs longer than other workers, with real cost savings being realised through less staff turnover and lower recruitment costs,” Liza says.

“That’s just the start of a long list of benefits that people with disability bring to a workplace. Not only do they add to a company’s diversity, they can also enhance their reputation to both customers and the community. So ultimately, it makes good business sense to employ people with a disability.”

STEPS’ hope is that one day all employers will focus on the person and their abilities, not their injury, illness or disability.

Finding the Right Fit is Key in Bringing Employers and Jobseekers with a Disability Together https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/finding-the-right-fit-is-key-in-bringing-employers-and-jobseekers-with-a-disability-together/ https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/finding-the-right-fit-is-key-in-bringing-employers-and-jobseekers-with-a-disability-together/#respond Thu, 28 Nov 2019 01:17:27 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=18193 Across Australia, during the week of November 25 – 29, jobseekers with a disability and employers are coming together for one day to connect, explore each other’s potential and find mutual opportunities.

This is the aim of AccessAbility Day, a government initiative now in its third year. It’s an obligation-free day for employers to experience the potential jobseekers with a disability can bring to their workplaces, and for people with a disability to experience a career aligning with their interests.

Philip Allnutt from STEPS in Alice Springs says there are mutual benefits for both employed people with a disability and the employers who hire them when they find the right fit.

“The feedback we hear from employers is that people with a disability are very reliable and highly valued team members that contribute greatly to the work place,” Philip says.

“Having an employee with a disability also creates empathy and awareness in others along with a desire to learn and understand more about disabilities.”

STEPS Education and Training is a provider of the Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) program which provides language, literacy and numeracy assessment and training to eligible students, which Philip says is the first step towards finding meaningful employment.

“Our role is to work with clients to set goals and then find the path to achieving them. This involves a discussion about the client’s work experience and career choices and from there we work out an action plan to help reach their aspirations with a reverse marketing approach.”

While there are many clients who Philip says have benefited greatly from joining the workforce, there is one in particular – Ben, a word-loving bookworm – who stands out as having found his perfect fit at the Alice Springs Library.

“Ben had a huge fascination with Doctor Who,” Philip says. “He’d bring all the Doctor Who books from the library to our SEE classes and we’d use them to teach language and literacy. He was a keen reader and we wanted to help him with that interest.”

Ben’s attendance at the SEE program four days a week included a work experience component at the Library, de-commissioning books.

“The position was one that came with a lot of responsibilities and was very meaningful work. Ben’s confidence grew substantially through this placement, empowering him independently to become work ready,” Philip says.

Employers interested in discovering the potential of jobseekers with a disability should call STEPS on 1300 078 377.

STEPS – leaders in mental health research, innovation and best practice https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/steps-leaders-in-mental-health-research-innovation-and-best-practice/ https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/steps-leaders-in-mental-health-research-innovation-and-best-practice/#respond Wed, 30 Oct 2019 01:35:24 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=18051 STEPS provide a range of mental health services aimed at supporting and empowering individuals through their STEPS Employment Solutions and STEPS Community Services streams. They are also active in the research space, taking part in innovative research projects, cementing them as leaders in innovation and best practice.

STEPS Employment Solutions Manager Liza Brock has recently co-authored a paper in the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Journal, summarising the major developments in Australia since the first introduction of Individual Placement and Support (IPS), discussing challenges and opportunities in the mental health and vocational sectors.

The paper highlights the important role vocational activities can play in recovery and sustained wellness.

Work can provide a broad range of benefits to employees apart from just financial security. Taking part in a meaningful activity can add to self-worth and give a sense of personal accomplishment as well as enable more opportunities to meet new people, reducing social isolation.

Having a purpose to ‘get up and go’, can form a major part of a mental health recovery strategy.

Liza believes the IPS has definitely improved the employment opportunities for people living with severe and persistent mental illness.

“It has changed the way clinical teams and employment providers think about the abilities of our joint clients and the positive effect working has on improving a person’s overall health,” Liza said.

“As Disability Employment Service (DES) providers, the challenge is appropriate funding to continue to provide the level of support IPS clients require in order for them to obtain, maintain and sustain long term employment.”

The paper cites that more promising gains are currently being made in the youth mental health space compared to the adult mental health space.

“Clients that are referred to IPS when they are 14-25 have usually not been on their mental health journey for a long period, and therefore can have a more rapid recovery, however recovery is different for everyone and it does not always mean symptom free, it’s all about having the best possible life and developing strategies to cope with the illness,” Liza said.

“The older someone is, especially if they have lived with their illness for many years may take longer to be motivated to find employment due to their lack of self- confidence and belief in themselves.

“Employment goals are now included in client’s recovery plans. It can often be a change in their mindset especially if they didn’t think they were capable of working.

“Motivation is the key predictor of success for IPS – if someone wants to work, they will usually be successful in finding and keeping a job.

STEPS Employment Solutions specialise in supporting recruitment for people with injury, illness and disability across Australia.

Liza encourages any businesses that are considering diversifying their workforce and taking on an inclusive approach, to find out more about the benefits to business.

“We always look at the abilities and goals of our clients and then find the best match employer, based on their needs as a business, we want a ‘win-win” for both employer and for our clients to become valued members of their team. ,” Liza said.

“We can provide as much or as little support and training to both employer and client to achieve their goals.

“We maintain regular contact with our clients to ensure they are coping with their new employment and talk through any strategies, difficulties and successes.”

Liza says, looking forward, STEPS are using what they’ve learned through the research project for new applications.

“We are now using the principals of IPS to assist those recovering from addictions and returned veterans,” she said.

“We will continue to grow our IPS program and use our expertise in mental health to assist as many people as we can reach their employment goals.”

Liza’s message to the wider community about mental health is that there is nothing wrong in asking for help.

“Any one of us, at any time can and will go through periods of being mentally unwell, there is no shame in needing assistance and putting your hand up for help to get through these periods,” she said.

STEPS specialist, holistic approach to mental health support and advocacy has made them a leader in mental health recovery strategies, helping to overcome barriers, enabling people to achieve their goals.

They tailor support to suit each client’s needs, with support programs built on dignity and respect.

TAKE TIME FOR MENTAL HEALTH THIS WEEK https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/take-time-for-mental-health-this-week/ https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/take-time-for-mental-health-this-week/#respond Tue, 08 Oct 2019 23:53:23 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=17927 With mental illness being the leading cause of disability in the nation affecting 1 in 5 Australians every year, STEPS is committed to providing mental health services aimed at supporting and empowering individuals, reducing stigma and skilling workforces to better support people with a mental illness.

And since Mental Health Week is acknowledged during the week of 5 to 13 October 2019, now is the time to think about ways of looking after our own mental health while also reaching out to others who need support.

‘Take time for mental health’ is this year’s theme, one which resonates with STEPS Chief Executive Officer Kerry Staines.

“Taking the time to reflect on mental health is why our holistic approach towards wellbeing, support and advocacy has made STEPS a leader in mental health recovery strategies,” Kerry says.

Mental Health Week coincides with World Mental Health Day, which is held on 10 October every year. With people around the globe acknowledging the value of mental health, Kerry said it’s encouraging to see the associated stigmas beginning to break down.

“STEPS helps to break down barriers for people with mental illness through our close work with local businesses and strategic partnerships with community organisations and government,” she says.

“These relationships help us achieve greater opportunities for those experiencing mental illness.”

One way STEPS actively supports mental health initiatives is through STEPS Community Services.

“A huge part of what STEPS Community Services does is centred around supporting people with mental illness, including those with severe and persistent mental illness, on their journey to recovery,” Kerry says.

STEPS Community Services coordinates a number of projects and recreational activities aimed at improving well-being. Classes such as art and music are offered along with social gatherings, camping, fishing and bush walking.

And because spending time in nature is a proven way to improve both mental and physical wellbeing, STEPS Nursery is a social venture offering a space where individuals can come and enjoy the health and well-being benefits of gardening while socialising, learning new skills and gaining work experience.

STEPS also provides mental health services through its Employment Solutions stream that provides services helping clients get mentally prepared for work, aiding them to find a job that’s right for them and supporting them post-employment.

STEPS Employment Solutions Manager Liza Brock says while finding work can be difficult generally, it can be especially difficult when the job seeker feels stressed, anxious or depressed. “Finding employment can play a pivotal role in mental wellbeing, which is why STEPS Employment Solutions offers tailored support and advice to assist clients with their career pathways and provides on-the-job support to ensure the best outcome for both the employer and employee.”

Kerry says while STEPS offers a number of mental health services, ultimately the goal is to provide opportunities. “By assisting a person to be healthy, well and secure, opportunities that truly make a difference, become possible” she says.

STEPS Charity – By the community for the community https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/steps-charity-by-the-community-for-the-community/ https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/steps-charity-by-the-community-for-the-community/#respond Mon, 26 Aug 2019 05:33:26 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=17668 STEPS Charity was established to “fill the gaps”, funding projects in the community with no available government funding and an obvious need to support those people who had been left to fall between the gaps of various government support programs.

Purely driven by the support of the surrounding community, STEPS Charity receive no government funding – in fact all of their work is funded through the generosity of those who share the charity’s vision to create a brighter future for people with a disability.

One of the charity’s major success stories has been STEPS Pathways College, an Australian first educational program that is giving young adults with a disability new hope for an independent future.

STEPS Charity are also working to support young people and families with Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome gain better access to support and services on the Sunshine Coast through STEPS Autism Treehouse.

STEPS Charity Manager Angela Harrison said the work of the charity throughout many different communities is crucial for the one in five Australians who live with a disability. It promotes equality and offers opportunities for those individuals to gain independence and improve the quality of their life.

“I wouldn’t be here, If I didn’t believe in the cause,” Ms Harrison said.

“There are 78,000 families in our nation that say, ‘what will happen to my child when I’m gone’.”

“So, it’s a very real issue. We have been serving in this space for 30 years and we get to make a real difference every single day.”

Much of the funds raised for the charity are driven through business supported social events such as the BA Murphy Constructions Race Day, Vantage Homes Trek for Autism and larger scale premier events like the annual STEPS Grand Winter Ball.

Ms Harrison said the overwhelming support of local business’ showed that STEPS Charity has the ability to speak to the hearts of many, but it also shows, that the charity is able to engage in ‘proactive partnerships’ where both parties are able to benefit from the relationship.

This type of positive partnership is achieved through a shared interest between the charity and business with mutual goals and values. Ms Harrison said that the way in which commercial business operates is beginning to change and many businesses are genuinely concerned with how they can help make a difference in their local communities.

“The majority of the people who partner with us, it’s primarily around them getting to make a difference and them making a difference in a really grand way,” Ms Harrison said.

“We are supporting young people living with a disability and partnering with organisations, it gives them an opportunity to say, ‘look I’m doing my part socially’, it helps their staff members connect with the morals and values involved, it drives staff engagement and it builds credibility for their brand.”

In 2018, STEPS Charity was able to raise more than $640 000 to change the lives of those living with a disability. Through their initiatives, they are helping more and more young people with disabilities learn to live independently and are supporting Australian families including the 190 000 families on the Sunshine Coast who have one or more children who have Autism.

Celebrating the 30th anniversary of STEPS Group Australia, Ms Harrison said members of the charity and its supporters are continually committed to helping the hundreds of Sunshine Coast residents who are supported every day through the charity’s various programs.

“Disability doesn’t discriminate it can turn up in anyone’s life at any time, whether that’s a physical disability, an intellectual disability or mental illness. If you actually stop and think about it, it probably affects someone you know, and love. We are trying to be that bridge and fill that gap for those people we love.”

Brain Injury Awareness Week -The Invisible Disability https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/brain-injury-awareness-week-the-invisible-disability/ https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/brain-injury-awareness-week-the-invisible-disability/#respond Thu, 22 Aug 2019 05:26:38 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=17665 Brain Injury Awareness Week 2019 occurs from August 19 to 25, and is an opportunity to raise awareness about the causes, symptoms and impacts of brain injury.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, over 700,000 Australians have a brain injury. Three in every four of these people are aged 65 or under.

Brain injury is often called the ‘invisible disability’ because there may be no external or physical signs. Raising awareness and education goes a long way towards treating people with brain injury more equally.

People with brain injury also have the right to work, and employment plays a vital role in recovery, general wellness and quality of life.

Sunshine Coast father-of-two Darron Eastwell suffered a traumatic brain injury in a mountain biking accident in 2015.

The former senior banking executive worked extremely hard at his recovery over the last four years, but still had one more goal to tick off his recovery list – he was still to achieve his goal of returning to work.

Darron signed up with STEPS Employment Solutions to get the support and training he needed to achieve his employment goals.

With the support of STEPS, Darron started working at Mambo Coffee Roasters after completing their specialist barista training course then additional work experience and has not looked back.

STEPS Employment Solutions Maroochydore site leader Angie Dorman said in only a few months Darron found his niche and was successfully placed into paid employment.

“In a short period of time he was contributing to his family’s finances and making new connections through work, right where he wanted to be, continuing to achieve his goals,” Angie said.

“We got to know Darron’s goals, we knew that returning to the workforce was a very important step,” Angie said.

Darron hopes that his story may provide others with motivation to keep positive and push themselves.

“My wife took on the role of providing and caring for our family after my accident, now I get to contribute too,” Darron said.

“I want a career, not just a job, and I want to be part of a network, meet people and be a contributing member of society.

Darron’s employers Rick and Jacque Caspersen believe in the value of a diverse and inclusive workforce, they know that people with disabilities bring a whole new suite of strengths to their business such as increased problem-solving skills, persistence, adaptability, willingness and loyalty.

STEPS Employment Solutions specialise in supporting recruitment for people with injury, illness and disability, they help customers with tailored support and advice to assist them with their career pathways, as well as provide on-the-job support to ensure the best outcome for both the employer and employee.

During Brain Injury Awareness Week you can help raise awareness, by talking to friends and family and sharing information online about brain injury.

Equal opportunities in the workplace https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/equal-opportunities-in-the-workplace/ https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/equal-opportunities-in-the-workplace/#respond Thu, 15 Aug 2019 06:46:09 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=17623 STEPS Employment Solutions have been providing disability employment services on the Sunshine Coast for 30 years.

What started as a small group of parents looking to fill the gap in support for their children with a disability who were leaving school, turned into a national roll out of disability employment support services providing people with a disability more equitable access to the workforce and financial independence.

STEPS Managing Director Carmel Crouch was one of those parents determined to ensure her child had the same opportunities to employment as everyone else, and today she continues to drive STEPS’ vision for equal employment opportunities for people with a disability.

She said that while much had been achieved in improving the rate of disability employment over the last 30 years, there were many employers who were yet to realise the benefits of employing someone with a disability.

“People with a disability bring a whole swag of skills and specific traits that can be a real positive to any workplace, including great problem-solving skills, flexibility and loyalty,” Ms Crouch said.

“Many of the jobseekers we work with are skilled and experienced within their field, it is our job to encourage employers to see past the disability and instead see the unique abilities of each candidate.”

In the last month STEPS have helped over 1000 people with a disability on the Sunshine Coast find work.

STEPS provide a range of opportunities to help people back into the workforce and on track to their chosen career.

They provide jobseekers with one on one support to ensure they’re prepared for employment and succeed in their new role. STEPS can help people with;

  • Setting career goals
  • Resume writing and interview preparation
  • Training to improve workplace skills
  • Helping to find and apply for jobs
  • Support once they find work
  • Workplace advice and information

In addition to disability employment services, STEPS also offer full recruitment service to employers, run workshops and courses that increase employability skills, and offer training designed in conjunction with local industry-to-skill jobseekers for local jobs.

Darron Brings a Whole Suite of Strengths to the Workplace https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/darron-brings-a-whole-suite-of-strengths-to-the-workplace/ https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/darron-brings-a-whole-suite-of-strengths-to-the-workplace/#respond Thu, 27 Jun 2019 06:43:16 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=17360 Darron Eastwell is a well-known inspirational figure on the Sunshine Coast.

The former senior banking executive can now add published author to his long list of credentials after documenting his story of survival in his book ‘The Day I Broke My Brain.’

The book tells the story of Darron’s recovery over the last four years since suffering a traumatic brain injury in a mountain biking accident in 2015.

The Sunshine Coast father has overcome hardship and pain to get where he is today.

After a long road to recovery, Darron was still to achieve his goal of returning to work, so he signed up with STEPS Employment Solutions to get the support and training he needed to achieve his employment goals.

“It was easy for us to connect Darron with the right support services to assist his transition back into paid employment, his employer saw how quickly Darron became a very valuable asset to their team, and we just connected the dots.

“We got to know Darron’s goals, we knew that returning to the workforce was a very important step.

“We believe understanding our jobseekers’ goals are the key to our success.

“When Darron had a few challenges, I was able to make some suggestions to help him overcome them, such as taking daily notes and recording them in a ‘memory book’, a really simple but effective tool,” said Angie.

Some say from people’s differences arise great talents and perspectives that have the potential to make our society richer – that’s certainly the case with the team at Mambo Coffee Roasters .

Business owners Rick and Jacque Caspersen believe in the value of a diverse and inclusive workforce, they know that people with disabilities bring a whole new suite of strengths to their business such as increased problem-solving skills, persistence, adaptability, willingness and loyalty

Darron does not let much, if anything, get in his way. He is a motivator.

Darron started working with Rick and Jacque after completing their specialist barista training course then additional work experience and has not looked back.

“My wife took on the role of providing and caring for our family after my accident, now I get to contribute too,” Darron said.

“I want a career, not just a job, and I want to be part of a network, meet people and be a contributing member of society.

“I still have small hurdles, like fatigue, it’s still a challenge some afternoons, but I know my limits” Darron says.

“My hope is that my story may provide others with motivation to keep positive and push themselves.

Darron’s message is a powerful one, it’s based on hard work and a ‘can do’ attitude.

It’s an ethos he shares with his employers. Their shared belief is centred on a strong work ethic.

Jacque believes that all people have their strengths.

“You’ve just got to give it time and get to know your employee’s strengths, and how they can value add to the business, and go from there,” Jacque said.

He is also one of the nicest guys you could meet.

Darron hopes that sharing his lived experience can help others, go to Darron’s website for more information and links to brain injury Australia.

Rick and Jacque are right up there with Darron, being some of the nicest people you could meet, they have a diverse workforce and they are driven business people.

Their passion for coffee is unmistakable and they love sharing it. But for them it’s not simply about running another successful specialty coffee business, their love of what they do runs deep.

They’ve been at the helm of some of the Sunshine Coast’s most popular expresso bars for over a decade. It’s clear to many that they do more than make just a good cup of coffee.

They train the best baristas and new business owners in the region, Rick isn’t your usual trainer, his love for his craft and the people he works with, is what sets him apart.

Both Rick and Jacque feel like their business has prospered since employing Darron.

“We’re lucky Darron chose us,” Jacque said.

STEPS helps customers with tailored support and advice to assist them with their career pathways, as well as provide on-the-job support to ensure the best outcome for both the employer and employee.

It Makes Good Business Sense to Employ People With a Disability https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/it-makes-good-business-sense-to-employ-people-with-a-disability/ https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/it-makes-good-business-sense-to-employ-people-with-a-disability/#respond Fri, 01 Mar 2019 02:28:26 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=16752 Studies show that people with disability take fewer days off, take less sick leave and stay in jobs longer than other workers, with real cost savings being realised through less staff turnover and lower recruitment costs.

That’s just the start of a long list of benefits that people with disability bring to a workplace. Not only do they add to a company’s diversity, they can also enhance their reputation to both customers and the community.

STEPS Employment Solutions offers recruitment services to a broad range of businesses and organisations at no cost, working with employers to find the best possible outcomes for their business needs.

STEPS Employment Solutions Executive Manager Phoebe Payne believes all businesses can benefit from hiring a person with a disability, not only by achieving their recruitment and broader business goals, but also from the valuable attributes a person with a disability brings to the workplace such as creating valuable customer relationships and boosting staff morale.

“We’ve supported thousands of people into employment, building confidence with our customers and the benefits are real for both employers and employees,” Phoebe said.

“Most people with a disability won’t need changes to the workplace, so it’s a good idea to chat with your employees first.

“Any modifications that are needed can usually be arranged at no cost to employers through the Australian government’s Job Access program”.

“Feedback from our clients is that they are not only happy with their new staff member, they also love that they get to be a part of something that gives back to the community and makes real change.

“We not only find the best fit staff for the business, we really get to know and work closely with businesses to provide the best possible recruitment solutions.

“We offer ongoing support to make sure the candidates placed are working out well and meeting the business objectives and expectations.

“We offer recruitment services to a broad range of businesses and organisations at no cost, it’s a real win-win situation,” Phoebe said.

Phoebe believes there is still much work to be done to increase the employment rate of people with a disability and  help shift the broader mindset from ‘what people can’t do, to what people can do’ in the community.

Bond Busters Business Owner Bonnie Dean recommended using STEPS to find staff.

“With government incentives supporting employing someone with a disability we were able to spend a bit more time training our staff from STEPS Employment Solutions knowing a few weeks of their wage were already covered,” Bonnie said.

According to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data almost one in five or 4.3 million Australians reported living with disability. Entering employment can help to provide people with a disability with increased confidence, expand their social network and social skills as well as an opportunity to develop a career, providing economic security which leads to a better standard of living and overall wellbeing.

As a for-purpose organisation STEPS Employment Solutions hope to stimulate change and create greater opportunity for people with a disability.

How to find the best DES provider for you https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/how-to-find-the-best-des-provider-for-you/ https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/how-to-find-the-best-des-provider-for-you/#respond Thu, 30 Aug 2018 06:17:29 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=16214 Disability Employment Services (DES) providers come in various sizes and business types, and are as diverse as the communities they are a part of.

Here are three tips for finding a DES provider that best suits your needs and goals.

Meet the staff

The staff are an important part of your experience with a DES provider.

You’ll be meeting with the staff often, and they’ll be supporting you as you prepare, find and maintain employment. It’s a good idea to meet the staff and ensure you feel understood and appreciated.

“Our Hobart team are great listeners and love making people feel welcome,” STEPS Hobart manager David Johns said.

Location, location, location

When meeting other people, whether it’s a catch-up with friends or an appointment in town, everyone wants to feel comfortable and safe, and enjoy a convenient commute.

Meeting with your DES provider should be no different. Consider providers that are located in areas you’re already familiar with, or offer flexible options for meeting and engaging with you.

“We’re located in the heart of Hobart, and our office is fully accessible,” David said.

“But one of my favourite things about the way we work is if a customer would prefer to meet somewhere closer to their home, in a coffee shop, online or another location, we’re totally flexible.”

It’s all about you

Nobody wants to feel like a number. Your needs and your own personal goals are important, so take time to list these and find a DES provider that is understanding and offers personalised support.

“We believe that our jobseekers’ goals are the keys to our own success,” David said.

“We help our customers with tailored coaching and advice to assist them with their career pathways, as well as provide on-the-job support to ensure the best outcome for both the employer and employee.”

It’s what we do and how we work with people in our community that makes the difference. Find your closest STEPS Employment Solutions office today.

Deaire uses own journey to help others https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/deaire-uses-own-journey-to-help-others/ https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/deaire-uses-own-journey-to-help-others/#respond Wed, 06 Jun 2018 23:59:01 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=15925 Coming to the end of her studies and searching for work, Deaire McMullen, who has Cerebral palsy, first heard about STEPS from a university careers advisor. Nearly seven years have passed since Deaire first visited a STEPS Employment Solutions office, and we sat down with her to learn more about her journey from being a customer to sitting on the consultant’s side of the table.

How did you come to work at STEPS Employment Solutions?

“Most of the entry level jobs in my area were on the ground, on your feet kind of work. I knew realistically I wasn’t going to be able to do a lot of that, physically. I went to STEPS and signed up as a customer. One day my consultant said ‘our manager wants to have a bit of a chat to you’. I went into his office and sat down and he said to me ‘your consultant is moving into a different position, and you’ve got the qualifications and the experience. Do you want to apply for the job?’ and nearly six and a half years later I’m still here!”

Your role is changing to from working with both Disability Management Service (DMS) and Employment Support Service (ESS) customers to just DMS. What does that mean for you?

“DMS supports people with more temporary disabilities, illnesses or injuries. It’s tricky because even though on paper, DMS should be easier than ESS, you get more people with attitudes because they’re here because they have to be.

How does your own experience affect the way you support these customers?

“One thing I’ve always appreciated is that I can use my knowledge, because I’ve been on the other side of the table and I know how the system works. I can often just say to people ‘I’m here, I work 30 hours a week, I don’t get any benefits from Centrelink anymore, and if I’m here and I’m doing it, you can too’. That’s where I think I have a bit of a lead in how I do my job. I think learned experience is a very underappreciated skill.”

What’s one of the challenges you find in the disability employment industry?

“There can be a mindset that people with a disability can only do cleaning or hospitality or retail or something like that. It’s important to see that people with disabilities can do well in career jobs if a few little modifications are made.”

What is one thing you enjoy about being a part of the STEPS team in Maroochydore?

“One thing I love about the team here is that it’s never about what I can’t do. I have the same job as everybody else and if there’s something physically that maybe I can’t do, I just let them know and we figure it out.”

How has working with STEPS affected other areas of your life?

“I say to people if you met me six years ago you wouldn’t recognise me. I was a completely different person. I was very quiet, introverted person. I suffered with anxiety and depression myself and I was very insecure. I owe this job everything. I’ve got my own house now, I’ve paid off my car and I’m about to start home renovations. And that’s all from this job, from STEPS.”

STEPS set to feature in conference exploring innovation in disability employment https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/innovation-in-disability-employment-steps-set-to-feature-in-conference/ https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/innovation-in-disability-employment-steps-set-to-feature-in-conference/#respond Thu, 31 May 2018 02:21:13 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=15900 A few of our staff are heading to Sydney this month to represent STEPS Group Australia at the 2018 Disability at Work: The Next Frontier Conference.

Local chocolate factory finds perfect recipe for staff https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/chocolate-factory-finds-perfect-recipe-staff/ https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/chocolate-factory-finds-perfect-recipe-staff/#respond Fri, 19 Jan 2018 01:08:55 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=15807 Visiting a chocolate factory is a childhood dream for many but for one local woman it’s what she has to look forward to every day.

Rhonda Hammond landed her sweet gig at Macaday Farm, local producers of delectable choc coated macadamia bars, after new owners Emily and Bernie Wickham turned to STEPS Employment Solutions for support.

“We found STEPS by accident, but now that we know they exist it’s a way for us to find all our new employees,” Emily said.

Before Rhonda joined the Macaday Farm team Emily and Bernie juggled managing both production and sales on their own.

“Trying to run that factory with just my husband and I was quite difficult, and Rhonda relieves a lot of the pressure. It’s made the process a lot smoother.”

Rhonda’s new job, which involves preparing the handmade rocky road, has played an important role in helping her manage her disability and overcome personal challenges.

“I didn’t want to get out of the house beforehand and now I feel happy because I have a reason to get up in the morning,” she said.

“Emily and Bernie’s attitude towards the business is just brilliant. They’ve got integrity, they want to thrive with this business and take it into the future. That makes me really happy because I want to be a part of a team like that.”

Emily encourages all businesses to consider employing people with a disability and said the government incentives available when hiring someone with a disability can greatly help new businesses, giving them the financial confidence to hire a person long term.

“It helps keep our cash flow going in these early stages of our business and allow us to get the help that we need,” she said.

“Just because people have a disability doesn’t mean that they can’t work. We have a daughter who has a disability and we’d hate to think that people wouldn’t employ her because of her disability,” she said.

“We want people who want to get excited about the business, and that’s what Rhonda does.”

6 tips to land a job interview https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/6-tips-to-land-a-job-interview/ https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/6-tips-to-land-a-job-interview/#respond Thu, 12 Oct 2017 05:27:30 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=15333 Job searching? The process can sometimes be long and stressful. You can ease the pressure by following these easy steps to secure an interview for the job you want.

1. Write a brief resume and cover letter

A resume and cover letter is your chance to make a good first impression, so spend some time on it. It’s a good idea to personalise each resume for the position you’re applying for. Try to be brief but convincing, highlight your strengths, capabilities and achievements – in short, help the employer to see why you’re the best person for the job.

Want to know more? Take a look at some quick tips on resume and cover letter writing.

2. Organise your job references

Job references are crucial to the job applying process. Ask people who can best provide you with a positive recommendation if they will provide you a reference and let them know about the job you are going for before you share their details with potential employers so they are prepared. Give them a brief outline of the job description and what you would like from them.

Find out more about how to generate great job references.

3. Make a list of job openings that suit your skill set

Search for the right job for you. Read the job description carefully and make sure you meet the criteria – note down each position that is suitable. Make sure your search includes employment websites, community message boards and social media but also use your network by asking friends and family if they know of any job opportunities.

Find some of the best job search sites.

4. Make sure your personal life is private

While you are job hunting it’s a good idea to apply privacy settings to personal social media accounts.

It’s now pretty standard for prospective employers to look up job candidates on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. So don’t let your social media activity lessen your chances of being hired.

5. Start applying for jobs

A good way to approach the job search is by focusing on quality over quantity. Concentrate on applying for the roles you most want and are qualified for, and tailor and target your resume to those positions.

Some job openings require you to complete a job application as well as submitting your resume and cover letter. Concentrate on making the best application for a small number of job openings, rather than sending out 50 resumes that don’t stand out.

The repetitiveness of job searching can be challenging so do aim to stay positive and motivated.

6. Stay connected

Make sure you can be easily contacted. You may need to keep your phone with you during regular business hours and regularly check your junk email to ensure no emails slip past.

Don’t sit around waiting for employers to call you. Keep searching, a brand new day may mean a brand new job opening! Keep in mind that most employers only notify the successful applicants, so if you haven’t heard back, it’s fair to assume you didn’t make the shortlist. But keep looking!

5 ways to improve your communication skills https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/5-ways-to-improve-your-communication-skills/ https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/5-ways-to-improve-your-communication-skills/#respond Thu, 31 Aug 2017 03:46:30 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=15210 There’s a reason why we say communication is key. It’s because communication is how we connect to others. It’s how we express our thoughts, feelings and ideas to the people around us, and it’s also how we come to understand them.

Unfortunately not all of us have the ability to convey our message clearly. Still, there is good news – communication is a skill that we can all possess if we are willing to learn and practice!

So for those who are uncomfortable with communicating or often struggle to get your point across, here are 5 ways you can brush up your skills and become an effective communicator.

1. Listen

Paying attention and truly listening to someone underpins good communication. Sometimes it’s easy to get distracted by your own thoughts or by what’s happening around you. Listening can help your understanding and it shows respect to the speaker.

Sometimes it helps to repeat what the other person is saying: try repeating the main points or phrases of their conversation. This can help you remember the discussion later and outwardly shows the speaker you are paying attention. Remember not to talk over people or interrupt them, wait until they’ve finished speaking before responding to them.

2. Be aware of body language

The way our body is positioned when we talk to someone is a form of communication. Body language sends a message to the person we’re talking to; it can signal if we are listening or not, or show our interest.

Simple body language like eye contact can show someone respect and signify that you’re listening. Eye contact can also help you stay focused on what the person is saying. Crossed arms or looking down can sometimes make us seem unapproachable to others, and can signify an unwillingness to engage in conversation.

3. Ask questions

It’s okay to clarify! Asking questions is one of the ways we learn and improve our understanding. Poor communication and miscommunications can be a result of misunderstandings. Clarifying a point with someone can also demonstrate to others that we are listening.

4. Be brief and to the point

The best way to achieve clarity is to be concise. To ensure we are understood by others it sometimes helps to know what we are going to say before we say it. It’s best to think about the main message we want to convey and write a few short, sharp sentences that expresses this. Remember it helps to be specific!

5. Take notes

Writing things down is a good way to ensure nothing is forgotten or miscommunicated. If it’s appropriate, take notes while someone is talking (but keep good body language in mind). If unable to take notes, write the main points of discussion down straight after it happens. Taking notes can reduce instances of miscommunication and mistakes, and you avoid having to go back to the person to ask them to remind you.

3. Team work

At times staff have to work together on group projects. To accomplish results you need to be able to work and collaborate with others by generating ideas and sharing responsibilities.

4. Organisation

6. Initiative

The ability to think ahead, anticipate what needs to be done and complete that task is a valued skill in the workplace. Those who demonstrate initiative often reach goals faster than those who don’t.

7. Learning

Businesses are continually changing and adapting to suit new demands and employees must adjust accordingly. Successful employees have a willingness to gain knowledge and learn new skills that help them achieve results in a changing environment.

How to talk about your weakness in a job interview https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/how-to-talk-about-your-weakness-in-a-job-interview/ https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/how-to-talk-about-your-weakness-in-a-job-interview/#respond Mon, 26 Jun 2017 02:16:01 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=15060 What is your greatest weakness? An interviewer posing this question to you can be one of the most nerve-wracking moments in the job interview process. It’s a question every job applicant should prepare for and it’s important to be truthful, while not revealing a weakness that could ruin your chances of getting the job. So to help you prepare we’ve put together 5 quick tips to talking about weaknesses in a job interview.

Know your weakness

It’s important to know your weaknesses because one of the reasons why an interviewer asks this question is to gauge your self-awareness. This is why denying that you have any weaknesses in an interview is not a good response – everyone has weaknesses. The interviewer will think either you’re not being truthful or have zero self-awareness. The same goes for responding “I don’t know” to that question.

So, it’s a good idea to spend some time thinking about a particular area that you are weak in and want to improve. Try to make a list of these weaknesses.

Only mention a weakness that is work-related

When considering which weakness to talk about in a job interview, ensure you only choose examples that are related to work. Personal weaknesses can sometimes be relevant but it’s a good idea to keep it on the professional side.

Be honest, but don’t choose a skill that the job position requires or values

It important to be genuine in your response, don’t make a weakness up just because it sounds good. Interviewers may be able to detect your dishonesty and it will hurt your chances of receiving the job.

Work to tailor your weaknesses for the job you are applying for. It’s a good idea to read the desirable skills listed in the job description and make sure you don’t make any of these skills your weakness.

For example, if you’re applying for a management role and you reveal to the interviewer that you struggle with resolving conflict, you probably aren’t going to be chosen as the successful applicant. In a management role disagreements are going to arise and the interviewer will be looking for someone who can resolve issues efficiently, and with minimal impact.

Be brief but specific when you describe your weakness

Don’t dwell on your weakness, or go into great detail. Instead focus on briefly outlining what you think your weakness is, making it as specific as you can.

Offer solutions to overcome your weakness

After you have outlined your weakness make sure you point out how you plan to manage, improve or overcome it. Providing ways to tackle your weakness works to not only ease the concerns the interviewer may have about your limitations but also demonstrates your problem-solving ability. It’s good to have already taken steps to address your weakness before going into the interview, as it shows initiative and your ability to self-regulate.

Job searching? 5 tips to keep you positive and motivated https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/job-searching-5-tips-to-keep-you-positive-and-motivated/ https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/job-searching-5-tips-to-keep-you-positive-and-motivated/#respond Mon, 12 Jun 2017 02:58:35 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=15009 Searching for a job can be a tedious process. Trawling through job sites and completing seemingly unending applications can become a drain. Optimism and drive can dull quite easily while job searching and this can lead to a cycle of unhealthy and ineffective habits.

But don’t despair! We know it’s important for job seekers to keep up morale, so we have put together some quick tips to make sure you remain positive and motivated throughout your job search.

1. Make regular hours and set daily goals

It can help to set regular hours when you search for a job, some like to take the 9 to 5 approach. This is when all your job searching activities, like writing resumes or completing job applications, happen between 9am and 5pm. Clocking in and out at regular work hours establishes a practical routine and a structure that can yield productivity.

To maximise your time and efficiency, set daily goals; like find 3 vacancies you would like to apply for and tailor your cover letter to these positions, or apply to 3 jobs you really want. It’s best to start with small achievable goals first, as you can build upon these further.

2. Schedule some down time

While you are job searching it’s important to have some time set aside for yourself. Carve out some time where you can relax and don’t have to think about your job search. Continue to do the things you enjoy and are interested in.

3. Take care of yourself

It’s an easy thing to let slide when you’re on that job search path, but it’s important to maintain your health and well-being. Try to exercise regularly, as the endorphins you generate can improve your mood. Maybe you could get some fresh air on your lunch break and take a walk outside.

4. Donate your time

With extra spare time, sometimes job seekers are at loss of what to do with it. If this sounds like you, then you might consider volunteering for a cause you’re passionate about. This is a great way to keep busy, meet new people and give back. You’ll also learn new skills and have more experience to add to your resume.

5. Create a support network

Searching for a job can be an anxious and stressful time so make sure you surround yourself with people you trust. Reach out to family and friends and don’t be afraid to ask for help or support if you need it. Sometimes it helps to just talk through your worries or concerns with someone.

Often people find it helpful to talk to someone who has gone through a similar situation. If that’s the case try to find a friend that has spent some time searching for a job, they can understand what you’re experiencing and can offer advice. You can also find other jobseekers online with sites like Meetup who have Networking for Jobseekers Group.

6 steps to job reference success https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/6-steps-to-job-reference-success/ https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/6-steps-to-job-reference-success/#respond Mon, 12 Jun 2017 02:38:05 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=15004 Job references are a must for employees in the hiring process, and a good reference can be the difference between you either securing or missing out on that dream job.

Good references don’t just happen, it takes time and effort on your part – preparation is key. Here are 6 easy ways to help you start generating great references.

1. Think

When thinking about job references, it is important to consider: which people in your life can best promote you? Think of people you have worked with or impressed with your skills, abilities or attitude.

Make sure you only ask those who you believe will give you a positive reference, because a weak reference can reduce your chances of getting the job you applied for.

A good professional reference can be a former employer, co-worker, teacher, supervisor, vendor or client that is aware of your abilities and attributes.

If you are unable to use professional references you can list personal references – these are people who know you and can speak about your personality or character. Some good candidates are: teachers, acquaintances, neighbours, coaches, and volunteer supervisors.

2. Choose

Remember that the referees you choose may change depending on the job you are applying for, so think about who is the most appropriate person to list as a reference for the position you are applying for. In other words, tailor your references like you would tailor your cover letter.

It’s a good idea to choose someone you know you can rely upon. This means you should pick someone who you know will answer the phone call or who will get back to the prospective employer in a timely manner. If they are unreliable in this way, you probably shouldn’t list them, as most employers won’t chase down references, they will just move on to the next suitable job applicant.

3. Ask

After you have chosen your job references, make sure you ask if they are willing to give a positive recommendation as your referee. You definitely should not list references you have not asked.

Make sure you confirm their details, ensuring you have their full name, job title and up-to-date contact information. It’s also a good idea to verify how and when your references would like to be contacted.

4. Explain

Make sure you explain what it is you want from your referees, if you want them to talk with your prospective employer about particular skills or attributes you have, remind them of this.

In order for your referees to give you the best recommendation they need information and they need to be prepared. So give your references as much detail as you can, outline the type of position you are applying for and the job description. It would also help to tell them who might be calling and when they can expect the call.

5. Thank

Don’t forget to thank your referees, whether you get the job or not, they have done you a favour and took the time to speak on your behalf.

A quick call, thank you note or small token gift is a polite way to show your appreciation, and can help maintain a good relationship with them and may increase the likelihood of them agreeing to act as your referee again in the future.

6. Learn

If you didn’t get the job don’t be hard on yourself, instead focus on the opportunity to learn from this process. Ask your references what questions the employer asked and how they answered them.

This information can help you prepare for future applications, and next time you’ll be able to brief your references accordingly.

Core values reflected at Debt Rescue Processing https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/core-values-reflected-debt-rescue-processing/ https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/core-values-reflected-debt-rescue-processing/#respond Wed, 30 Mar 2016 06:59:05 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=13867 The business values at Debt Rescue Processing are to genuinely care about and assist those who are doing it tough financially and struggling to break the cycle.

When they were looking for a new administration officer CEO Shane Edwards therefore felt it was natural to extend these values to their employment practices and appoint someone with a disability, illness or injury who may not be finding it as easy to find work.

“We welcomed the opportunity to provide a job to someone with a disability,” he said.

22 year old Nikea Grant of Nooasville was the STEPS Employment Solutions candidate to gain the role proving that a brain tumour aged three was no barrier to her worth and suitability for the role.

The tumour left Ms Grant with weakness over the entire right side of her body, but she said having this disability from an early age, she has not known what life without it would be like.

“When it comes to lifting things and using my right hand I do need to adjust and adapt,” she said.

“It’s good working here – the people are really nice and I enjoy all of it, particularly working on a computer,” she said.

“STEPS were a great help and put me through a course in basic administration covering things like Excel, which has helped a lot in this role,” she added.

Mr Edwards said Nikea was the perfect fit and has settled right in as a part of Debt Rescue,” said.

“She’s outgoing, friendly and has become a valued member of our team.

“She is consistently rising to the challenges associated with her role and is happy to take on additional responsibilities, like working extra hours to assist our client engagement team.”

When it comes to what employers need to know about hiring someone with a disability, Mr Edwards said ‘many people take their employment for granted’ but in his experience someone with a disability works very hard and values their job immensely.

“Nikea’s attitude towards her job is fantastic. She is always happy, willing to help and enjoys contributing to our business.”

While it was not the motivator behind Debt Rescue Processing employing someone with a disability, Mr Edwards said the Government incentives funding program helped cover the cost of getting someone into and trained for a role.

“STEPS have been great,” he said.

“They paired us with an employee who can fulfil all the requirements of the role and made the whole process really easy.”

Big picture thinking at iMend Phones supports business growth https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/big-picture-thinking-imend-phones-supports-business-growth/ https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/big-picture-thinking-imend-phones-supports-business-growth/#respond Wed, 30 Mar 2016 06:58:19 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=13863 Brothers Josh and Luke Ryan are thought leaders known for their visionary approach to business and now they are extending their innovative philosophy to support the rapid growth of their team at iMend Phones on the Sunshine Coast.

“If you match opportunities to someone’s potential and skills, you can change perspectives, change lives and achieve great outcomes for everyone,” Josh said.

By engaging STEPS Employment Solutions to support the evolution of their business and social impact focus, Josh and Luke said they were thrilled when they discovered such a source of high quality employees.

“It’s been a hugely positive experience for us to say the least,” Josh said.

“Working with STEPS has reinforced our belief that people who are differently abled can have a profound impact if given opportunities in the right roles, often more so than those without injury, illness or disability.”

The team at iMend firmly believe that for any business, it is just a case of considering the opportunities available and matching them to the skill sets of those looking for work via STEPS Employment Solutions.

“STEPS have been brilliant,” Josh said.

“They’ve been so supportive and accommodating and always follow up.

“Just knowing we could rely on them to take care of the HR while setting up the new side of the business has been really good.”

Josh and Luke point to their newest team member Owen D’Souza as the embodiment of what can happen when labels are ignored and potential is encouraged and unleashed.

Owen was employed as project manager for the installation of an entire production line for the refurbishment of mobile device LCD screens.

“Owen is invaluable to our team and we’re enjoying seeing him flourish– he is truly integral to the launch of this challenging new business venture, yet he doesn’t seem phased at all by this first-of-its-kind operation,” Luke said.

“Having the opportunity to work with Owen has meant we’ve gained not only an expert, but a positive and energetic employee who has saved us more trouble than we could ever have foreseen,” he added.

The Ryan brothers made the connection with STEPS Employment Solutions as part of a focus on delivering sustainable, positive community impacts across financial, environment and social performance areas of their business.

“When we spoke to the team at STEPS our eyes really were opened to the social integration possibilities available,” Josh said.

Josh and Luke have a big vision for iMend with a number of works in progress and a plan to expand their operations state-wide and even nationally.

“What we have done with STEPS is just the beginning of something much bigger,” Luke said.

“We’re focussed on leading the way in making the Sunshine Coast a world leader in successful sustainability and working on bringing the principles of the ‘blue economy’ to life here with government and local business, so it’s a really exciting time.”

Before hiring staff Josh and Luke feel it’s important for employers to get their head around what disability really means and to ‘remove the barrier in their head’ because ‘limited skills in some areas could be heightened in others, so it’s worth working on fitting the job to the skills.’

No more staffing nightmares at Soulfish Seafoods https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/no-staffing-nightmares-soulfish-seafoods/ https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/no-staffing-nightmares-soulfish-seafoods/#respond Wed, 30 Mar 2016 06:55:09 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=13858 Finding trustworthy, reliable staff has been an ‘absolute nightmare’ for Dan Learoyd in the past and almost put him off starting his new business Soulfish Seafoods based in Coolum.

Luckily Mr Learoyd stumbled on the ‘indispensable’ Andrew ‘Jack’ Eden when he needed new staff and found he had all the right experience, credentials and attitude for the job.

With a back injury including painful bulging discs and arthritis, Mr Eden was a STEPS Employment Solutions client and needed to declare his injury, illness or disability to an employer, making finding appropriate work and a flexible employer a challenge.

“Finding work has been quite difficult,” Mr Eden said.

“I picked up odd jobs in maintenance, but had experience in the seafood industry and retail, so working with Dan has been an easy fit.”

“Having a back injury was definitely one of the problems I had with finding work, but Dan understands the problem and works around it – he’s a great guy to work for and likes to make it comfortable for everyone here.”

Mr Learoyd praised Jack as a ‘definite leader who treats the business as if it were his own.’

“He more or less manages the place when I’m away at times,” he said.

Soulfish Seafoods is a busy operation supplying many fine dining restaurants on the Coast and the Shane Family Farmers’ Markets at Noosa, Kawana and the Big Top, Maroochydore.

“I have no hesitation with leaving Jack to run the business while I’m away– he’s very reliable and hardworking, plus everyone here enjoys working with him, he likes to have a laugh, is great with customers and knows exactly what he’s doing.”

With two other staff who have a declared illness on his team, Mr Learoyd said he was a bit unsure about hiring someone with a disability [injury or illness] for the first time, so started by asking the question about what the disabilities were and assessing if he could work around them.

“I find the guys I’ve employed much keener than people without a disability– I guess as they can find it a bit harder to get work, so when given the chance they have all seemed to rise to the challenge and feel comfortable at work.”

Having the support of Government incentives has been excellent too Mr Learoyd said noting the benefit of a lump sum payment for keeping employees with injury, illness or disability on long term is worthwhile.

“Every bit counts in small business and if you can recoup some of your wages costs it’s an incentive to put some of these guys on.”

“It’s been very easy and amicable with STEPS and I hope more people get behind them as there are obviously some decent people on their books– I couldn’t see why they wouldn’t work out for other employers like it has for me.”

Busting myths and forming lasting bonds https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/busting-myths-and-forming-lasting-bonds/ https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/busting-myths-and-forming-lasting-bonds/#respond Wed, 30 Mar 2016 06:48:21 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=13855 When it comes to employing someone with a disability, injury or illness owner of Bond Busters Bonnie Dean said employers need to ask what the disability is and make an informed decision about whether or not they can work around it.

“You’ve got to ask whether the employee could make a valuable, well trained team member,” she said.

“The position needs to suit the disability [injury or illness] and visa versa.”

Ms Dean is part of a dedicated group of local employers involved in STEPS Employment Solution’s 30 Jobs in 30 Days initiative launched today to create 30 new jobs in 30 days between 19 Feb and 20 March 2016 on the Sunshine Coast.

“We’re asking local businesses of all kinds to support the 30 Jobs in 30 Days campaign and join a group of inspirational local employers who have helped change the lives of others while adding value to their business,” STEPS Group Australia Managing Director Carmel Crouch said.

“We really want the business community to get involved and find out how deeply rewarding and straight forward it can be to employ a person with an illness, injury or disability – they’re the hardest working, most passionate staff you can get.”

Ms Dean understands people’s unique capabilities and potential better than most as she has two brothers with disabilities who she is highly involved with – one with an acquired brain injury and one an intellectual impairment.

“Although they have both worked for me numerous times, I’ve steered clear of employing them directly because it’s important that they have independence,” she said.

“My brothers have shown me that they are both highly employable under the guidance of a ‘special kind of employer’ and I’m happy to be that type of employer.”

Bond Busters is in the process of starting with its fifth STEPS Employment Solutions employee.

One of these appointments was highly dedicated and motivated Christine Ruskan who was hired via STEPS and quickly stepped up to become team leader last year.

“I love working here!” Ms Ruskan said.

“It’s an excellent team. The ladies and everyone are awesome,” she said.

Prior to working at Bond Busters Ms Ruskan had been taking medication for anxiety for several years, but after working with Bond Busters for six months she was able to slowly stop taking them and has ‘never felt better.’

“I had major social anxiety and would feel my heart racing and have sweaty hands and a horrible tightness in the chest and throat.”

“It’s an amazing feeling not to be taking medication. I used to keep home and to myself, so this job has made a huge difference.”

Christine has become a champion of the Bond Busters team and one of the most dedicated members of the team of 12 Ms Dean said.

“If ever there is an emergency or something needing to be done outside of hours, Christine is always the first to offer.

“A time when Christine really shone was when our Caloundra Team Leader resigned with no notice.

“Christine was straight onto me asking for the opportunity to take over – she alleviated so much stress that day and has been the Caloundra Team Leader ever since.”

With Government incentives supporting employing someone with a disability, Ms Dean also commented that Bond Busters has been able to spend a bit more time training the person knowing a few weeks of their wage were already covered.

For employers or job seekers to get involved in the 30 Jobs in 30 Days campaign, visit 30jobsin30days.com.au or call a STEPS Employment Solutions’ office near you (Maroochydore 07 5409 900).

“Toni from the STEPS Employment Solutions Maroochydore Office has been wonderful looking after me. She understands my business very well now and she’s able to match suitable employees,” Bonnie Dean, Owner Bond Busters

TIPS FOR JOBSEEKERS (CLEANING AND RELATED ROLES)

[/mk_title_box]

Q. Bonnie, what are the three most important traits and/or skills in a jobseeker you feel are important to your business when it comes to selecting new staff?

A. Our business runs with a fairly unskilled workforce and we do offer full training, so the traits we look for are more of a physical nature as the work is very physically demanding on the body. Probably the three most important traits are:

  1. fit and energetic with no major injuries/physical health issues
  2. own transport with ability to use maps
  3. basic communication skills, ie communicating via text and writing job notes

Case Study – Motor Trades Association https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/case-study-motor-trades-association/ https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/case-study-motor-trades-association/#respond Sat, 17 Oct 2015 06:14:22 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=13389 A collaboration with the Motor Trades Association (MTA) for the Northern Territory was formed as a result of a proactive move by the peak body to tackle the critical skills shortage affecting the multi billion-dollar industry.

The MTA (NT) approached this skills shortage through an Indigenous Employment Program that comprised of multiple collaborations aimed at gaining training and work outcomes for some of the most disadvantaged individuals across the state.

In conjunction with the Department of Correctional Services, the Centre for Appropriate Technology and Charles Darwin University, a strategy was formed to develop skills in automotive trades while significantly improving the employability of prisoners post sentence. This strategy was based in part on figures showing that previous prison based, skills building projects significantly decreased the rate of repeat incarceration from 50% to just 18%.

Utilising a unique blend of training, language, literacy and numeracy support, work experience, employability skills building, and workplace support, STEPS have helped to guide students through Automotive Vocational Preparation qualifications in readiness for employment in the automotive industry.

Our work with the MTA (NT) is an example of our innovative approach to training design and our passion for employment outcome focused training. It is in collaborative projects such as this that great outcomes for industry can be achieved along with positive social and economic benefits to the local community.

We believe that by addressing the needs of our customers we can positively contribute to the social and economic future of a community as a whole. Ask us how our customised training solutions can help you.

Passionate David gives indigenous job seekers a fair go https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/passionate-david-gives-indigenous-job-seekers-a-fair-go/ https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/passionate-david-gives-indigenous-job-seekers-a-fair-go/#respond Thu, 15 Oct 2015 00:59:21 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=13354 We recently caught up with David Johns, our Hobart based Project Coordinator for Jobs, Land and Economy – part of the Australian Government’s Indigenous Advancement Strategy. David filled us in on what exactly it is he does and what drives him to make a difference.

What do you do at STEPS?
We train, prepare, assist and mentor indigenous clients into work.

Do you have any special memories of helping someone find work?
I ran in to a guy once, a past client of mine, who had been unemployed for 936 weeks. That’s almost 18 years. He asked me if I could help him find work. I knew someone who owned a saw mill so I called him up and asked if he’d be willing to give this man a go. The saw mill owner said he would, so long as he could make it into a trial that day. By 4:30pm he’d offered the man a job and 4 years later he is still working at the saw mill. Getting that job changed his life. There are a few that are special to me.

What have you found most challenging about helping people to find work?
Trying to help someone who really doesn’t want to work is hard. It’s really difficult to motivate someone to work when they’re friends and family aren’t working. Peer pressure plays a big part in it and breaking that cycle takes guts, but when someone is ready to take that step it can make such a big difference to their life.

You work with local businesses every day, what has surprised you most about working with businesses in your area?
There are employers out there who simply aren’t willing to give someone a go, but then there are others who understand the difficulty some of our clients are having and are willing to give them a chance.

What do employers like most about working with STEPS?
The fact that we mentor our clients for the first 12 months of there employment ( and sometimes the employer as well). We work with the employer to iron out any issues, and we make sure their employees stay on track. Our employers find this hugely valuable as it helps them to run their business smoothly and it helps create good, long term employees and relationships all round.

Tell me about someone who has influenced your decision to do the kind of work you do?
Coming from a family of 9 (the youngest) we struggled to get by. So when I was 15 I left school and started seasonal work picking and packing apples. When that finished I started working as a storeman and worked there for the next 3 years. Then, when I turned 18 I became too expensive to employ anymore and I lost my job. I was unemployed then for 2 years. I’m passionate about what I do because I’ve been there, I know it’s hard and I know what my clients are going through. I can relate to them.

What do you do when you aren’t working?
I enjoy watching my sons play football and my daughter playing netball (although the netball refs don’t always appreciate my enthusiasm!). I used to play a lot of different sports but now (I’m to old) I enjoy a game of lawn bowls and go fishing when I can.

What might your colleagues or clients be surprised to know about you?
That I hate talking about myself! I can talk about what I do for hours because I’m so passionate about it. I’m a doer rather than a talker – that’s me in a nutshell.

Stepping up the job search https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/stepping-up-the-job-search/ https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/stepping-up-the-job-search/#respond Thu, 24 Sep 2015 03:17:51 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=13366 We’re proud to have officially opened our 8th STEPS Employment Solutions Queensland office last week in Gympie, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and local businesses and community organisations welcoming the new employment service to the region.

Our primary focus in Gympie will be helping people with a mental illness to find work as we champion to remove the stigma attached to mental illness.

STEPS managing director Carmel Crouch said the move to a mental health specific model for employment services was part of the holistic approach to recovery for people experiencing mental illness.

“We want to work with local businesses to break down perceptions about mental illness and convince employers that mental illness doesn’t stop employees from doing a great job”, Ms Crouch said.

So far STEPS have been successful in helping 75% of our job seekers find local jobs.

Carmel the right fit for the job https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/carmel-the-right-fit-for-the-job/ https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/carmel-the-right-fit-for-the-job/#respond Tue, 22 Sep 2015 01:16:20 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=13358 Townsville STEPS Employment Solutions created a perfect match recently when they set to solve Carers Qld’s latest recruitment woes.

When Carers Queensland, the peak body representing the diverse concerns, needs and interests of the nearly 500,000 carers in Queensland, needed a full-time Admin assistant for their Aitkenvale office recently, they were inundated with over 800 job applicants.

What they didn’t realise was that their dream applicant was right under their noses the whole time.

Waiting in the wings was Carmel, who had been working as a temp for Carer’s Qld since mid June and while she didn’t have all the qualifications required for the role, the skills she had learned on the job combined with a strong work ethic and passion for the job put Carmel at the front of the line.

Carmel’s Employment Consultant Linda Di Betta, said that since Carmel started her new role her confidence had gone through the roof and was growing daily.

“We’re proud of Carmel’s success and improvement within her life and her new job, and we’re proud of the partnership we have with employers like Carer’s Queensland”, Linda said.

Now, almost 2 months down the track Carer’s Qld Team Leader, Kirsty Ahern, said that she couldn’t have asked for a better employee.
“STEPS have been ridiculously supportive. Wonderfully flexible, prompt with responses and I never have to chase anything. They just made the process very easy”.

Presentation Of Your Resume https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/presentation-of-your-resume/ Thu, 03 Sep 2015 06:24:13 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=12996 As we mentioned in the first blog of this series, your resume is a personal marketing tool that will help set you apart from your competitors. And just like in the advertising and branding world, your resume has only seconds to catch the eye and impress the reader.

This makes the presentation of your resume crucially important.

Nice formatting
The formatting of your resume is important to the presentation and overall look and feel of your resume. You need to consider that the person reading only has a limited amount of time, so they will most likely not bother with a messy and hard to read resume. Simple things like easy to read fonts, clear and bold headings and concise sections of information will make their task much easier and will give you a good head start to make a good first impression.

Also, something as simple as the spacing between lines and sections of information is important, you don’t want to cramp it together and make it hard to read.

Fonts
Choose legible and sensible fonts and just 2 fonts maximum; 1 for headings and 1 for body text. Your resume isn’t a good place to show your creativity so standard fonts like Arial, Helvetica and Calibri are good choices. If you’re applying for a graphic/web design job and would like to demonstrate a little more typography knowledge, Open Sans, PT Sans and Source Sans Pro are your friends.

Fonts to definitely avoid: Comic Sans, Papyrus, Impact, Copperplate Gothic, Curlz, any script font.

Clear headings
Be sure to make your headings clear and obvious. This helps the reader skim read and find the information they’re after.

Bump your font size up to about 14pt and Bold them.

Clear sections
Make sure that your different content sections are also very clear. Again this makes it easy on the reader to find the relevant information that they need immediately.

Along with making headings bold as mentioned above, also use a full width underline, this will make your sections of information very easy to distinguish from each other.

Bullet points

  • Use bullet points or lists where necessary.
  • They are very easy to read and to the point.

Chronological Order
When listing things such as your education and previous work experience, be sure to order them from the most recent down to the oldest.

This video also has a couple of great tips and goes into some detail about these points.

What Information To Include On Your Resume https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/what-information-to-include-on-your-resume/ Thu, 13 Aug 2015 05:27:54 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=12889 In our last blog, we gave you an overview of what a resume is, it’s purpose when seeking a job and what to include. In this post, we are going to dive deeper into what to include on your resume and give you some great tips to help you out.

Before you get started, make sure you have gathered all of the necessary information and that you are prepared to spend a few hours putting together your draft.

Ok, now let’s get straight into it!

Personal/Contact Details

Not only is it important to include your contact details for when an employer wants to contact you, but you must make sure that you triple check that the details are correct. If you have a typo in your phone number or email address, it’s almost impossible for an employer to contact you for an interview.

Tip: Get your friends and family to read over it carefully.

Opening statement

Use the opening statement as an opportunity to give a quick a summary of who you are, where you’ve worked and/or studies, and what you bring to the job.
Start with one sentence about who you are and what you bring to the job, then go on to describe the skills and attributes you have that suit you to the job you are applying for.
Your opening statement should only be a few lines (3-6) and straight to the point. Edit out any unnecessary words.
Resume hack: make sure your opening statement is written in first person, but without personal reference. (Don’t say “I did this”, say “Did this” instead).
For example; Don’t say “I studied at Monash University”, instead say “Studied at Monash University”.

Qualifications & Certificates

Make sure to list any of your current relevant qualifications and certificates.
Education
Again, a simple list of your education is all that’s needed here.

List of key skills

Adding a list of about 10-15 skills is a great way to show the employer that you have the desired skills for the job.

  • Problem solving
  • Cash management
  • Data processing

You can also add a short list of software skills if they are relevant to the job.

  • Photoshop CS5+
  • Microsoft Word
  • WordPress
  • EFTPOS

Tip: If you carefully read the job description you will have a list of essential and desirable skills. If possible, respond to all of the essentials and as many of the desirable skills as you can.

Employment history/volunteering/work placements

Working backwards, from your latest job to your first. List any relevant employment, volunteering and work placements that you have.
The format should be easy to read for the employer.

Company Year from – to (eg 2006-2012)
Position
Brief one sentence of your role
List your achievements and contributions

Hobbies/Interests

Including your hobbies and or interests might seem like an odd thing to include in a professional document; but it gives the employer a little bit of an insight into you and your personality which can be a great advantage.
If you don’t feel that hobbies and interests are appropriate, than a short list of your personal attributes is another great way of giving a little bit of insight into your personality.

Example:
• Effective Communication Skills
• Honest and Reliable
• Flexible
• Time Management

References/referees

Your resume should list at least two people who can positively vouch for what you are like as a person and what you are like to work with. Some job applications will outline a minimum number of references, so be sure to read carefully.
Ideally your referees will be people who you have worked with before. Your neighbour might know that you’d be a great employee, but that isn’t appropriate. Also, your mum is a little biased, so don’t go adding her. Provide their name, their position title, and a way that they can be contacted.

Tip: Always ask your referees if you can list them first. This is also a great time to ask for their current contact details.

Our next blog post in this series we will go into details about the formatting and presentation of your resume.

What Is A Resume? https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/what-is-a-resume/ Tue, 11 Aug 2015 06:07:34 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=12875 We’re often asked, what is a resume used for and how do you write one? In this series of blog posts, we are going to help job seekers with tips and hacks on writing a great resume to land you that perfect job.

So, exactly what is a resume?

In a nutshell, a resume (Also known as CV or Curriculum Vitae) is an important document used when applying for jobs. A resume is a written summary of your education, work experience, credentials, and accomplishments. It is one of your most important tools of any job application as it is your first impression with the employer, sets you apart from the pack and leads to the all important job interview.

What is the purpose of a resume?

Employers evaluate your resume and compare your experience and credentials against other people who have applied for the same job. As your resume is only a snapshot of you, it is important to make sure you are putting your best foot forward with a well written and nicely presented resume. And that’s where we come in to help.

As your resume is your marketing tool, it needs to demonstrate:

  • That you are employable
  • That you meet the job and the organisation’s requirements
  • That you have the right qualifications and education
  • That you have the right experience and skills
  • That you have the right level of professionalism for the job

What to put on it?

What you include on your resume will vary depending on the job you’re applying for and your level of experience. Generally the following list is a great start. Not everything in this list must appear on your resume and the order might change from application to application

  • Personal/Contact details
  • Opening statement
  • Qualifications & Certificates
  • Education
  • List of key skills
  • Employment history/volunteering/work placements
  • Hobbies/Interests
  • References/referees

In the next blog post of this series, we go into further detail about what information to include on your resume.

Here’s a quick video summary answering what is a resume.
[su_vimeo url=”https://player.vimeo.com/video/109414852″]

What is a Cover Letter?

A resume is typically sent with a cover letter that provides additional information on your skills and experience. As your resume is generally short and often a bullet list summary; your cover letter highlights and elaborates on certain traits or accomplishments that would make you ideal for the particular job that you are applying for.

Ernie gives back to STEPS https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/ernie-gives-back-to-steps/ Fri, 24 Apr 2015 02:19:01 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=10559 Ernie Pehi means a lot to STEPS, and we hope that we mean a lot to him.

You see Ernie is one of those rare customers of whom we’ve been lucky enough to serve, and who is now returning his skills and experiences to the workforce – our workforce that is!

The relationship began when Ernie came to STEPS Employment Solutions looking for help to get back into the workforce after a particularly challenging period of his life.

But when STEPS Employment Consultant Sue Connelly mentioned that STEPS’ training arm of the business were going to be delivering there next Aged Care training course Ernie really started to think about his work options.

Having never previously considered a career in Aged Care Ernie’s thoughts immediately turned to memories of his mother’s role in caring for his sick father.

Ernie thought that if it wasn’t her that was looking after his father, it would be someone else, and he hoped that person would care for his father with the compassion and patience his mother had shown for many years.

And so Ernie decided to take the leap and begin the next chapter in his life starting with a new career in Aged Care.

Ernie enrolled in the training course and from day one new it was the right choice for him.

He admits there were some personal challenges along the way that threatened to bump him off track, but says the ongoing support of Sue Connolly helped get him through.

“Sue was very encouraging, very supportive, and helped to pick me up when things got a bit tough in my personal life”, Ernie said.

Ernie also has nothing but praise for the trainers who helped him gain his qualification in Aged Care.

“Wendy our trainer was great.  She really gets you absorbed into the work and makes you really want to learn. She was always very helpful and encouraging”.

Today Ernie is giving back to the organisation that helped gain him qualifications in aged care, and is applying his expertise as a support worker for STEPS Link In, a STEPS service that supports people with a disability in their home as well as providing connections with the community.

Ernie has thoroughly enjoyed his new career and working with the team at STEPS. He now has his sights set on gaining further qualifications that will see him working in hospitals helping people with a disability who are vulnerable.

STEPS Link In Manager Rob Walter is equally pleased with Ernie who has been a valuable member of the team for almost 10 months now.

“Ernie’s passion and attention to detail make him a great support worker, and our clients just love him”.

Cedric shares his flair for tasty French treats https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/cedric-shares-his-flair-for-tasty-french-treats/ Thu, 23 Apr 2015 06:30:45 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=10553 In the heart of Belgian Gardens one French man is helping to make a difference in the lives of people with a disability.

In just a short time Cedric Corre Patisserie has become the taste of the region supplying delightful French treats to the local community as well as supplying some of Australia’s largest retail and hospitality outlets.

But Cedric himself is a pretty special kind of guy. Working closely with STEPS Employment Solutions, Cedric has been employing people with a disability to help him prepare the patisserie’s popular tarts & cakes, while imparting life long on the job skills to his employees.

In a mutually beneficial relationship Cedric insists that his business wouldn’t be where it is today if it weren’t for the support of STEPS and the great staff he has been able to secure through the disability employment specialists.

STEPS Employment Solutions are thrilled that local businesses are giving people with a disability the chance to prove that they can be, and are, just as skilled and capable as their non disabled counterparts.

Cedric has now employed two staff members through STEPS and is so happy with their performance and the support he receives from STEPS that he is about to employ a third person to assist with deliveries.

The Australian Government currently offers financial support to businesses that employ people with a disability in an initiative aimed at increasing employment in the mainstream workforce and dispelling the myths associated with employing people with a disability.

Leanne’s passion for change gains results for local businesses and jobseekers https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/leannes-passion-for-change-gains-results-for-local-businesses-and-jobseekers/ Wed, 22 Apr 2015 01:30:52 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=10550 This week we spoke to one of our top Recruitment Consultants Leanne Wilkinson about what makes her most passionate at work and at play

1. Tell me how you first got involved with STEPS?
A former colleague of mine was working with STEPS at the Bundaberg office. There was a position available with STEPS for an Employment Consultant, she encouraged me to apply, which I did. I met with Glynn and the then Team Leader and from there it all began.

2. What have you found most challenging about supporting people with a disability to find work?
I think the most challenging thing is to change the perception of who a person with a disability is in 2015 and beyond, it’s trying to get business to see the diversity in their workplace as a better way to move forward.

3. What’s the best thing to happen since you started working with STEPS?
The best this to happen is working with a wonderful team of people who genuinely care about what they do. It’s a privilege to call my workmates friends and to work with people who support and help each other so much.

4. What do you wish other people knew about STEPS?
The passion and work that goes in behind the scenes to support our clients and work with them to achieve goals that they may have thought weren’t achievable.

5. Tell me about someone who has influenced your decision to do the kind of work you do?
I’ve been working in the employment industry for a very long time, so there has been many mentors etc. I think the biggest influence or motivator is when you see the pleasure that a client/candidate shows when they have found a job that gives them self esteem and confidence. There have been many of these so I can’t really name anyone.

6. What would you tell someone who is thinking about employing a person with a disability?
I would tell them that they will get an employee who will be dedicated and who will appreciate the opportunity. I would also be honest and make sure they were aware that there maybe some hiccups along the way but overall these will be outweighed by the positive impact their new employee will have on the workplace.

7. What might your colleagues or clients be surprised to know about you?
Most of my colleagues know most about me, I’m not one to hide too much. Mmmm, maybe that I…

8. What do you do when you aren’t working?
I try to relax and enjoy our property. I look forward to social activities and watching my daughter ride her quarter horse at different events.

9. What else can you tell me about STEPS?
STEPS is a very dedicated organisation who maintains it’s belief that all people are entitled to opportunities and that change in attitude is paramount to creating these opportunities. We all work hard to achieve this and will continue to do so.

Leanne works directly with businesses in the Bundaberg area matching skilled and experienced candidates to meet employer’s recruitment needs.

Aaron’s career blooms at Alice Springs Desert Park https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/aarons-career-blooms-at-alice-springs-desert-park/ Tue, 21 Apr 2015 22:35:24 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=10546 Getting a job at one of Alice Springs’ top tourist attractions isn’t easy.

But through hard work, dedication and a whole lot of passion one young man has maintained steady employment with the famous Alice Springs Desert Park for more almost 5 years.

Aaron Curtis got his foot in the door at the Park as part of a school based traineeship studying a Certificate II in Tourism specialising in Guiding.

Throughout his traineeship Aaron was already exhibiting some of the work ethic he continues to bring to the park today, completing his traineeship while maintaining a casual job at McDonalds, and successfully graduating from High School.

Aaron’s duties at the Park have been full of excitement from day one where he began working with the Park’s birds of prey.

After months of keenly observing Park guides presenting to tourists, Aaron soon started joining in on talks and Q&A sessions.

Aaron began working full time at the Park speaking to thousands of tourists every year informing visitors about local flora and fauna, cultural men’s business, and guiding visitors on the Park’s nocturnal tour.

Today Aaron has moved on to the Park’s horticultural department where he is learning new skills such as plant cultivation, land biodiversity and conservation.

Aaron says he wouldn’t have achieved what he has today without the ongoing support of the team at STEPS Employment Solutions.

“They have always been so supportive, and very respectful”.

Aaron is now studying a Certificate III in Land Management with the Batchelor Institute while continuing to work at the Alice Springs Desert Park.

While he hopes to one day travel and explore the Northern Territory, for now he is happy continuing doing what he likes the most.

“I love working outdoors, talking with visitors and guiding them through the Park”.

We love watching our customers learn and grow, and we’re there to provide support every step of the way. For information on how we can help you on your career path send us an email – we’d love to hear from you!

Lizzy’s Pet Parlour helping Mason achieve her dream job https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/lizzys-pet-parlour-helping-mason-achieve-dream-job/ Wed, 17 Dec 2014 06:17:38 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=10157 Lizzy’s Pet Parlour may be only 18 months old, but the pooch loving stylists have already racked up a loyal following in their home town of Bundaberg.

The business’s fast growth can be attributed to a combination of passion and creative flair with owner and animal lover Lizzy meticulous about the treatment her furry clients receive.

That’s one of the reasons why she’s so pleased with her latest recruit to the Pet Parlour team Mason, who has come on board as a school based trainee studying a Certificate II in Animal Care.

“Mason’s job is to wash and dry the animals to prepare them for grooming.  It’s a very important part of the overall service we provide, if a dog isn’t washed or dried correctly the grooming suffers”, Lizzy said.

“Mason always does a great job, she’s been a natural since day one”.

Mason began working at Lizzy’s Pet Parlour after a month of work experience.  She has now been with the team for 4 months and thoroughly enjoys her new job.

“I do hydro bathing and blow-drying pets for clients and love being around the animals”, Mason said.

“I love everything about my job!”.

But Lizzy hasn’t just been happy with the work of her new team member, she’s also found STEPS Employment Consultant Sheryll-lee a great helping hand.

“Sheryll- lee has been so supportive, anytime I have a question she’s there.  And the wage incentives STEPS have arranged have really meant a lot to the business, especially given that we are still in our start up phase”, Lizzy said.

For Mason there are big plans on the horizon as she sets her sites on one day becoming a Veterinary Assistant.

Lizzy’s Pet Parlour is open 6 days a week providing Bundaberg locals with all of their pet grooming needs, and more!

Lindsay’s Story https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/lindsays-story/ Wed, 17 Dec 2014 01:09:40 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=10184 Hi, my name is Lindsay Sutton. In 2012 I was living in Melbourne training to be a Para-Olympian for 2 years in shot put, coming sixth in the world.

In 2013, I suffered an injury.

In late March 2014 I came to STEPS Employment in Caloundra to be registered for employment assistance. I chose STEPS because of the positive stories I had heard about how they help unemployed jobseekers to find a suitable job and for the support they provide jobseekers and employers, from the job start until as long as needed.

At my first meeting with STEPS reception and then with my employment consultant and other trainers, I was treated with genuine respect, I was listened to, and was provided with information that made me feel that STEPS had the professional experience to support me.

I worked with several people at STEPS in my path to employment, though Brian Kerr, my employment consultant was the main person, and the one who ultimately placed me in August this year into my present job as a Kitchen hand at the Moorings cafe / restaurant. This job matched my career path perfectly. I love my job and am learning more than I had hoped was possible.

Being back in the workforce working means that I am on track towards my career goal of following a secure career path working in the kitchens at the mines.

Lindsay is currently training to compete in Dubai next year with hopes to make it to the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio.

Forming a long lasting relationship with STEPS Employment Solutions, Biniris have gone above and beyond their responsibilities as an employer to ensure people with barriers to employment find a place in their organisation.

Employment opportunities look bright under the NDIS https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/employment-opportunities-look-bright-ndis/ Mon, 15 Dec 2014 04:30:22 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=10168 With the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) only 18 months away, there are some exciting times ahead as organisations like STEPS and future funding recipients realise the opportunities presented by this new era in disability support.

One of the opportunities STEPS are particularly excited about is the increased capacity provided by the NDIS to assist people with disabilities gain access to employment.

Under the NDIS individuals who are not eligible for the current Disability Employment Services (DES) will have access to funds that can help them reach their career goals.

That means eligible NDIS recipients who may already be employed, are studying full time, or who have been assessed as not being work ready, will now have the opportunity to build their skills, gain experience and increase their financial independence.

The new funding will cover assistance with transport and personal care required to obtain and maintain employment, funding to build skills, support to find work in the individuals chosen field, and assistive devices such as hearing aids, wheelchairs, and personal communication devices.

STEPS will provide expert employment support for those funded under the NDIS along side our current services for people with a disability.  We look forward to helping more Australians achieve their right to employment, and working with individuals to achieve their career aspirations.

Debbie’s working hard to smooth the transition from study to work https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/debbies-working-hard-smooth-transition-study-work/ Sun, 14 Dec 2014 02:30:44 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=10163 With school finished for the year we managed to catch up with our busy resident National Disability Coordination Officer Debbie Rooskov to find out what it is exactly she does and why she’s so passionate about her work.

Tell us a little bit about the work you do

You will be jealous if I tell you.  We have the best job.  We work with a wide range of people who are really committed to ensuring people with disability have the best opportunity to reach their education, training and employment goals.

Our focus is to work with organisations at the strategic level to improve transitions, participate fully in education and training leading to appropriate and sustainable employment.

Some of the organisations we communicate regularly are schools, training providers, universities, employment services and employers, apprenticeship centres, government funded programs, government departments, community and disability organisations.

Working with organisations with similar visions help us to ensure that in the future people with a disability are more  informed and have a clearer focus on who does what, how to access services and when.

[su_pullquote align=”right”]Diversity is great and brings many rewards. Training providers and employers are now starting to understand these benefits. [/su_pullquote]

What do you aim to achieve in your role as a National Disability Coordination Officer?

Easy, to do myself out of a job.  Part of our role is to improve linkages and coordination between all services and together identify barriers to work or study. We aim to find solutions that make the transition into study or employment easy.

It‘s fabulous to work with organisations that assist jobseekers and students to become independent – it’s what we’re all striving for.

Another goal is to improve the capability of stakeholders to support people with a disability – we do this many ways.

What do you love most about your job?

People in this sector continually amaze me with how they go well over what is expected in their jobs to ensure people with disability can strive to achieve their goals.

I have a wonderful opportunity to work in metropolitan, rural and remote areas – they’re all so different.  Being welcomed into communities and working with proactive local providers to try a range of strategies to streamlines services is rewarding and gives you the motivation to keep going when you are away from home often.

Will people still have access to the services you provide under the NDIS?

Anyone can access our services and this will not changed when NDIS is introduced.

There are many people in our community who are able to access disability support in education, training and employment but feel they are not eligible.  We hope that looking at our resources and participating in events they may realise the benefits of just asking the question.

Our website has a wealth of information and will continue to be developed over the coming year with some exciting career and employment resources.

[su_pullquote align=”right”]It‘s fabulous to work with organisations that assist jobseekers and students to become independent – it’s what we’re all striving for.[/su_pullquote]

Do you have any particularly memorable moments in your time working as a NDCO?

I have so many!  Last year a mental health consumer and myself provided information to a local chamber of commerce that led to local stakeholders working together to provide free mental health first aid to businesses.  Next year we will be rolling out similar training to families.

Another was a work placement activity where students at TAFE and University were placed with the mining and energy sector to break down employer perceptions of people with a disability was great resulting in some good employment outcomes.

There has been so many other great moments and achievements that make me feel proud and passionate about my work.

What do you hope for the future for people with disabilities in terms of their ability to achieve their career aspirations?

That they can do anything and that they are valued both as a student and as an employee.  Diversity is great and brings many rewards. Training providers and employers are now starting to understand these benefits.

The transition from study to work is an exciting time but it’s important to be prepared, have an action plan and have a great support team around you.  The earlier you can start planning the better.  Time to action NOW!

STEPS National Disability Coordination Officers (NDCOs) organise and deliver support services for people aged 15 to 64 years with disabilities that are, or will be, attending university, TAFE or other training organisations. You can find out more information on the NDCO website at www.ndco.stepscs.net.au

To Steps,

I would like to have STEPS recognise Natalie Moss for all her patience, persistence, empathy, dedication in all areas to assist me during looking for work, illness, whilst in work and for advice/guidance to maintain my well-being.

Natalie has always remained calm when I’ve spoken to her while being stressed and sometimes abrupt. She understood my frustrations. Being a single Mum, financially struggling, Natalie always assisted in ways available, either gift cards or providing referrals to other agencies to seek assistance.

She has local knowledge which is vital for assisting me through hard times.

I am always comfortable with Natalie, and recommend her to assist with anyone.

Thank you Natalie for all your help.

Blake’s Story https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/blakes-story/ Mon, 12 May 2014 01:03:22 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=9082 I registered with STEPS while I was in Grade 12, as I wanted to get some part-time work to see me through both university study and university holidays. I really wanted a job in a field which had something to do with communication, as I have an extensive background in radio communication with my local surf lifesaving club.

From the minute I registered with STEPS I loved the way their service was delivered and the efficiency with which I was assisted to obtain steady part-time employment.

After every appointment I felt I had really accomplished something, even if it was as small as having made a change to my resume which would see me gain some sort of work.

Eventually in late February 2012, I obtained employment with STEPS as a Business Communications Consultant. I received extensive support and was not only employed within the company, but got to experience the support given to someone who had employment.

It was in late January of 2013 that I moved to the Maroochydore office. From that day on, I have been amazed by the continual level of support that I have been provided with from everyone at STEPS, from the IT staff to my Employment Consultant. I receive transportation to and from work twice a week by my Employment Consultant, and feel that the support I have been provided with by STEPS could not have been better if I had asked for it.

I like STEPS because they specifically manufacture the support that you require, rather than providing everyone with exactly the same support. If I did not receive transportation assistance two times a week, I would have to pay for a cab or catch a bus which would result in a lengthy walk from the Sunshine Plaza to work, a walk which, being blind, I would not be willing to attempt.

In short, if I did not obtain this assistance I would not be able to maintain employment. I am extremely grateful to STEPS for the services with which I have been provided.

[su_quote cite=”Janis”]I commend Sue Connolly immensely for all her valuable help, she is such an asset for STEPS to have on their team. Whenever I come into the office – no matter how busy she is – she always manages to see me and help me with everything I need to submit to my workplace. Sue has helped me so much with getting back into the workforce and keeping me in it too. Without Sue’s support I think I would have collapsed in a heap by now, she has a caring heart and is still very professional at all times. Not only has she helped me in such a huge way technologically but also mentally and emotionally – supporting me with some family problems as well. I love my job and have come a long way from where I was a year ago, I have so much confidence and that comes down to having such an awesome Employment Consultant as Sue. All the staff here are always very friendly, professional and prompt, and there is a great, supportive in the the office. I recommend Sue Connolly for employee of the year![/su_quote]

STEPS Bundaberg Awarded 5 Star Rating https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/steps-bundaberg-awarded-5-star-rating/ Wed, 26 Mar 2014 01:45:36 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/?p=8936 We are thrilled that our Bundaberg Employment team has recently been recognised as leaders in their field with a 5/5 star Government rating for their Disability Employment service.

STEPS has been in Bundaberg for over 20 years and a big part of our success in the region comes down to the excellent relationships that have been built with the local business community and the great support we receive from them.

“We would like to thank the business community of Bundaberg who have been so great to work with” said Glynn, manager of our Bundaberg office, “If there are any employers out there that have not experienced our service and are looking to recruit staff, I’d encourage you to give us a call”, she said. “Our Recruitment Consultants will meet you at a time and place that is convenient for you.”

Congratulations again to our “5 star” Bundaberg team – a group of real professionals who know Bundy, understand local issues and work hand in hand with employers, helping them to understand how people with a disability can play a role in their business.

However, he’s taken to working with Kelvin like a duck to water, stating this is the first time he really feels like he knows what to do. He appreciates that Kelvin takes the time to explain how everything works and why things need to be done a certain way, saying he wished he’d started on this path two years ago.

Working for Custom Steel Structures is Anthony’s first paid job. The 22-year-old likes to work with his hands and prefers to be outdoors so he was the perfect fit when Kelvin was looking for a trade assistant.

“I admire that Anthony will always ask questions and listens carefully,” says Kelvin. “He’s keen and has proven to be one of the most dedicated workers I’ve had – he’s even beginning to second guess me on site, which makes the job that much easier.”

Rockstar ambitions lead to success for Darryl https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/rockstar-ambitions-lead-to-success-for-darryl/ Tue, 16 Jul 2013 05:24:56 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/group/?p=6350 Job seeker success – Darryl

This good news story shows that community organisations working together can make a huge difference in people’s lives.

When we first met 53-year-old Daryl his one goal in life was to be a famous rock star. He had been diagnosed with Chronic Schizophrenia in his mid-20s, and had spent his adult life in and out of mental health facilities.

Before his diagnosis, Daryl was working towards becoming a trade qualified electrician, however he had been unemployed for over 30 years while receiving ongoing treatment from Wide Bay Integrated Mental Health Service for Psychotherapy and Medication to manage his condition.

His aging parents have provided great support throughout his life with help from assisted living. Daryl has also enjoyed strong social support from Bridges Recovery Services.

While we unfortunately couldn’t help Daryl become a rock star, but we did begin looking for great employment alternatives for him.

Now, thanks to a combined effort between Wide Bay Integrated Mental Health Services and STEPS Group Australia, Daryl now has paid employment plus he’s successfully working in two separate job roles!

A Merchandising Officer in the Bundaberg and Bargara area, he also works as a Commercial Cleaner and has had excellent feedback about his performance and attention to detail.

Daryl may not have achieved his dream role as a rock star but he’s definitely a STAR in our eyes. Well done, Daryl!!

Caloundra partnership leads to new skills and opportunities https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/caloundra-partnership-leads-to-new-skills-and-opportunities/ Mon, 15 Jul 2013 05:36:24 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/group/?p=6354 Sometimes our STEPS job seekers have few transferable skills to help them gain meaningful employment. However, a great working partnership between Rumba Resort & STEPS Group Australia is changing all that!

The Bulcock Street, Caloundra business has made a wonderful contribution to the local community by giving STEPS job seekers the opportunity to learn new and valuable housekeeping skills.

Director of Rumba Resort, Mark Hall, has supported our job seekers to train on site, learning the 5-star skills maintained by the Rumba Housekeeping team first hand. This training has proved invaluable for building our job seekers’ confidence and workplace skills. And the results speak for themselves!

Since Rumba training commenced late March, three of our job seekers have gained successful employment, while another is now ready to start her new career in housekeeping. “It’s such a pleasure to offer training in such a friendly supportive environment,” says Kellie, a Employment Consultant with STEPS  “I often see some of the ladies I’ve trained and when I think back to their first training day, it’s amazing to see what a difference it’s made.”

“We all know the importance of a person’s confidence and sense of belonging when they feel that they are contributing in the community and the team at Rumba are making that happen,” she adds.

Thank you, Rumba Resort, for giving our job seekers a head start!

Employment leads to new sense of purpose and independence https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/employment-leads-to-new-sense-of-purpose-and-independence/ Mon, 20 May 2013 05:44:30 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/group/?p=6360 John has autism and a spinal condition, and has undertaken a long, difficult journey to become an upstanding member of the workforce.

He began with STEPS Noosa in early 2010 as a full-time activity-tested client. STEPS helped John work through a few initial barriers with work skills training via our JumpStart Program and onsite counselling with Helen Evans.

John gained employment as a trolley collector, and his attitude and focus on work quickly turned around, to STEPS delight.    He never misses or turns down a shift, always arrives on time and is willing to come into work whenever he is needed.
John says employment has given him a new determination to work hard as well as a strong sense of independence and purpose.

He’s now planning to move into his own place and hopes to gain full-time employment, exceeding his benchmark hours.

He thanks STEPS for not giving up on him. We’d like to say, “Well done, John!”

Service Feature: Alice Springs Employment https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/feature-alice-springs-employment/ https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/feature-alice-springs-employment/#respond Sun, 17 Mar 2013 16:45:14 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/group/?p=7221 The cultural landscape in Alice Springs is vastly different to our other locations and so the delivery of our Employment service in this region is unique. Building rapport and trust with our clients here takes time,  cultural awareness and an understanding of family relationships, cultural, business and personal issues that our Indigenous and remote clients face.

The service that we  offer in this region is holistic and we are often working with clients for extended periods of time. It’s important that we build partnerships and maintain good connections with other community agencies and hold their trust in our mutual clients so we can to assist them with addressing a range of barriers.

Building rapport with Employers is also important to the work that we do in Alice Springs  and we have spent alot of time educating potential employers in Disability and have been able to secure great relationships with numerous companies who continue to seek our assistance in finding suitable staff and offering the support we are known to give including on job support, conflict resolution and Supported wages. We have also been responsible for delivering disability awareness to other staff to assist in our clients maintaining employment and also for social well being.

The success that our staff have had in building trust with all of our stakeholders in Alice Springs  is a great testament to the work they do in this region. here are just a few…

[hr]

Isobel has been with our service for 3 years, has an Intellectual Disability and Williams Syndrome. After a full year of addressing barriers and making links with employers, Isobel has successfully gained employment, we provide high ongoing support by working alongside her and the employer in the workplace resulting in a god boost in her confidence and skills. We are also proud to report that the Student Access Department approached us offering Isobel a trainee-ship in administration. as they had seen the support we offered Isobel and wanted to take advantage of this. This will commence in October and needless to say Isobel is excited and eager to start.

[hr]

Ethan is an Indigenous man that has been with our service for 4 years on and off. Because of the time we have spent with Ethan we have been able to place him into employment although he requires High Ongoing Support and needs constant directives at work which we provide three times a week. English is Ethan’s third language and he also has hearing loss so communication has been a barrier, we are fortunate however that due to the long standing relationship and the rapport we have built with Ethan he now feels comfortable in teaching us his language and he also trusts us enough to accept our referrals to assist with managing his finances. Ethan has now been able to set up a savings account and identify and save for his long term goals.

[hr]

Jade has been with our service for 5 years and suffers from Schizophrenia. Jade has been successful in gaining employment with Moderate Ongoing Support however due to her Mental Health barriers she constantly suffers periods of relapse because of medication. Our long standing relationship with Jade means that we have been able to identify periods of relapse and have built up a relationship with the employer where our support and guidance throughout these periods ensure that her employment is secure. We have also been able to partner and network closely with the Mental Health Services in the community in regards to Jade’s needs and ensure Jade’s Mental and General Health is safe.

Sonnys persistency pays off https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/sonnys-persistency-pays-off/ Thu, 12 Jul 2012 05:51:30 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/group/?p=6369 Sonny’s story started a year ago when he approached STEPS for help getting a job at Sound in Motion. Sonny had heard so many wonderful stories about the work of the owners, Brian and Lyn Bugenhagen, that he wanted to be part of the team.

STEPS and Sonny called in to Sound in Motion but, at the time, there was nothing available. Undeterred, Sonny visited regularly, dropping in his resume each time, even though they already had a cabinet full of copies.

His perseverance paid off when he was offered a part-time position at the store. Unfortunately, it was at the same time Sonny found out he needed a corneal transplant, and he was unable to accept the opportunity. The dream was not to be forgotten that easily.

As soon as Sonny was well enough to work, he approached Sound in Motion again. Although initially hesitant after the transplant, Brian and Lyn agreed to a trial period – with great success!

Sonny’s bright, friendly nature saw him fit well into the team. With support systems put into place by STEPS, Sonny was able to attend medical appointments and make up time on the weekend.

Working with STEPS gave Brian and Lyn the opportunity to identify their own needs along with Sonny’s. This in turn contributed to their understanding that we all have capabilities, skills and the capacity to deliver valuable expertise to each other.

Sonny works at Sound in Motion three days a week and absolutely loves his job. STEPS extends a warm thank you to Brian and Lyn for their continued support to Sonny, and for leading by example to other employers.

Back to the Streets https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/back-to-the-streets/ Wed, 20 Oct 2010 13:26:09 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/group/?p=6581 It only takes one thing to change your life forever. At a swimming hole near Townsville with his mates one week after finishing school, Craig’s future dramatically changed when he dove into the water and was seriously injured.

That was 12 years ago, and gradually things have changed for the better as Craig has come to terms with his new life and its challenges. Part of overcoming those new challenges is regaining a level of independence through employment, something that has gained momentum since he contacted STEPS Townsville.

With the assistance of Linda Di Betta, an Employment Pathways Mentor at STEPS, and the support of his new employer, Mick Brennan of Backstreet Bikes, Craig has secured a job working 30 hours a week as an automotive spare parts and retail assistant.

“I first joined STEPS – via Centrelink – four months ago and they found me this role pretty much straight away,” Craig says. “I always wanted to work with motors as I have spent my whole life around cars and bikes, plus I felt if I stayed home any longer I would go crazy – I really wanted to work and have that human interaction.”

Linda put Craig in touch with Mick, who was keen to give him a go, and the three worked on a plan to get Craig into the workforce. “Craig was keen to get into work in mechanics as he had done work experience at school as a trades assistant, cleaning electric motors and assisting the mechanical fitter with mechanical repairs” Linda said. “From the moment I met Mick I could see he was a wonderfully warm and welcoming bloke, and he didn’t see Craig’s disability but rather his ability. Mick was so keen to give back and really give someone who was enthusiastic a chance.”

Through STEPS linking with the Federal Government’s Job Access program, $22,300 worth of modifications were made at Backstreet Bikes to allow Craig to work more easily. These changes included modifying work benches and toilets, and marking the shop floor with yellow lines to create a safe work space for Craig and his chair. The grant also paid for equipment or Craig to photograph the products in the store.

“We have five staff all up and they all enjoy working with Craig. It’s hard to find hard-working employees and it’s refreshing to see an enthusiastic young man who wants to give it a go in life. STEPS have been wonderful – I would recommend them to anyone,” said Mick.

“I would say to others in the same situation as me – don’t give up hope,” Craig says. “STEPS can really help.”

Embracing diversity https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/embracing-diversity/ Mon, 18 Oct 2010 13:35:27 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/group/?p=6079 Right across Queensland during September, STEPS celebrated Disability Action Week – embracing the difference and diversity that enriches our communities. And what an exciting week of celebration it was! From sausage sizzles to “Come Try a Sports Day” STEPS engaged their respective communities throughout the week, bringing smiles and highlighting the value of every person.

The aims of Disability Action Week are to encourage positive attitudes towards people with a disability, improve access and make our community a better place for everyone. During the week, STEPS was out and about encouraging the community to focus on a person’s achievements and abilities. Events highlighted that diversity and difference enrich communities and that people with a disability have much to contribute.

[hr]

In Bundaberg, STEPS filled almost every day of the week with a wide variety of events and activities, gaining a good deal of media attention. STEPS Bundaberg office was involved in developing, planning and managing events for the region’s disability sector – a Shopping Challenge, a Come and Try Sports Day, Equity Employer Awards, and to wrap things up, a social day for clients.

Every day, local television, newspaper and radio covered the events, starting with the Shopping Challenge which involved television reporters, radio announcers and newspaper journalists. The seven media personalities were invited to shop at the Hinkler Central Shopping Plaza with a simulated disability, for example, in a wheelchair or vision or hearing impaired. “The feedback from the participants after the event was enlightening,” said STEPS Community Engagement Representative in Bundaberg, Ken Parker. “The challenges set were a sample of every day activities, like buying sausages over the counter at a butcher in a wheelchair, or asking about a holiday at a travel agent for a sight impaired person.”

Equally challenging was “Come and Try Sports Day” where a multitude of sporting activities were offered for sampling. All activities were designed for people with disabilities, and involved local sporting identities to encourage participants. Everything from soccer, basketball, athletics, hip-hop, tai chi, Frisbee, golf and obstacle courses were on offer, with over 100 people attending. The next day, Thursday, STEPS Employer Engagement Consultant, Geoff Dettl hosted employers at the STEPS office to award gold membership to the STEPS Equity Employer Group. Representatives from the two businesses, Rides N Slides and Megatoy Play Systems, attended. The week ended with a social day for STEPS’ participants with a sausage sizzle and a great variety of outdoor fun and activities. “Many questions arose regarding the validity of the decisions of unofficial, self-appointed cricket umpire STEPS’ own Matt Chamberlin,” said Ken. “The majority of umpire decisions demonstrated a strong bias against STEPS’ staff, but overall, the feedback from all the participants who attended was very appreciative.”

[hr]

Sunshine Coast

From the small to the spectacular, STEPS staged a variety of events throughout the Sunshine Coast as part of Disability Action Week. At the well-attended Eumundi Markets mid-week, STEPS hosted a showcase of stalls and entertainment highlighting the achievements of people with a disability.

STEPS’ Community Engagement Representative, Kelly Paton,  said the event was to encourage communities to become more welcoming and inclusive places. “It’s about the whole community celebrating the skills of people with disabilities and the great work of their carers,” said Kelly. The showcase at the Eumundi Markets, hosted for the first time by STEPS, was formerly hosted by community organisation Spiral, and is in its ninth year. It is a collaboration of Sunshine Coast-based respite, mental health services and employment, including Spiral Inc, Compass, Link-In, Endeavour Foundation and House with No Steps. “The showcase is always a great opportunity to promote the talents of people with disabilities, and includes a range of activities that reflect society – from sports to entertainment and arts,” Kelly said. “We had wheelchair basketball, martial arts displays, singers and dancers, as well as an arts exhibition.” As part of Disability Action Week, all STEPS sites on the Sunshine Coast hosted sausage sizzles, sizzling through over 800 sausages in four days.

STEPS rewards equitable employers https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/steps-rewards-equitable-employers/ https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/steps-rewards-equitable-employers/#respond Fri, 15 Oct 2010 13:12:48 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/group/?p=6579 During September, STEPS awarded over 30 businesses throughout Australia membership to the STEPS Equity Employer Group.

STEPS continue to work closely with the business sector throughout Queensland and Northern Territory, forging valuable partnerships that not only assist business to achieve their goals, but also to strengthen our communities. The STEPS Equity Employer Group started last year, seeking to give public recognition to organisations that consistently provide opportunities for people with disabilities. There are now well over 50 Equity Employers.

Coinciding with Disability Action Week, STEPS acknowledged new Equity Employers through newspaper and magazine advertising throughout Queensland, and Employer Engagement Representatives presented certificates in person to winners.

They said I would never work again… https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/they-said-i-would-never-work-again/ Fri, 15 Oct 2010 13:01:25 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/group/?p=6545 When Ross came to STEPS in Bowen, he came with a medical report that summarised a series of unfortunate events leaving him suffering chronic pain and limiting his mobility.

He had undergone extensive back surgery; been involved in a motor bike accident resulting in a right knee injury; an old gun-shot wound to his right shoulder limited his range of motion and strength in his right arm. The medical opinion he had been given was that he would never work again, and would be on the disability support pension indefinitely.

“Well,” he said, “I wasn’t going to accept that. They wanted me to roll over and play dead.” This positive attitude was what embarked Ross on his journey with STEPS as he joined the program as a volunteer participant. “When I came to STEPS I never had even seen a resume. I had no idea what one looked like.” In his working life, Ross always relied on word-of-mouth to get the next road construction or driving job. STEPS worked with Ross in building his resume and then connected him with Skilling Solutions who detailed his aptitudes, likes and dislikes. This process gave him confidence to actively job-search for a permanent position.

When Ross approached Mansell’s Premix Transport with his resume for a position as a driver/operator of a concrete truck, he says that he had no qualms about disclosing his medical history. Right from the start the company have supported Ross as an equal opportunity employer, and Ross now has a permanent, full-time position at the Bowen Depot.

“I’ve found that it pays to be upfront with people so they know what they’re dealing with. The job is perfect for me as a driver; there are no heavy duties at all.”

Would he ever recommend STEPS to other people looking for support when they have difficult challenges to overcome? We get a resounding “Nah, probably not,” with a bit of a grin, and a twinkle that goes with his good humour, as he brushes off his hands on his trousers, to shake my hand and head back to work.

Each Expo featured stands from over 60 organisations, many of which used the Expo as a direct recruitment exercise. A head-start and a step in the right direction https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/a-head-start-and-a-step-in-the-right-direction/ Thu, 05 Aug 2010 10:50:13 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/group/?p=5890 With months of her high school life still remaining,  Bundaberg’s Winnie Mudiman has already taken big steps  towards gaining extra qualifications for her future after  graduation.

As well as studying and completing coursework for her HSC, the 17-year-old student has been taking part in a school-based traineeship with the support of  STEPS Bundaberg office.

Since December last year, Winnie (pictured above) has been working at the office of Bundaberg real estate agent Century21 every Friday in order to obtain a Certificate II in Business as well as valuable on-the-job experience. Century21 owner/manager Pat Dixon was instrumental in helping Winnie achieve the traineeship position thanks to her connection with STEPS employment consultant Sheryll-lee. “The arrangement came about because Sheryll-Lee used to work for us and phoned to see if we would have Winnie for work experience,” Ms Dixon says.

Winnie’s enthusiasm for the work and her abilities and attitude during her work experience impressed Ms Dixon so much that it was a simple decision for her when STEPS contacted her to consider Winnie for the school-based traineeship. “We are a real estate sales and property management business and have been established for nearly 20 years, and Winnie is our first school based traineeship person,” she says. “We were approached for Winnie to do the traineeship after she had done her work experience here and absolutely loved the work.

“Every Friday, Winnie works on reception with a wide variety of duties, including running the switchboard, handling general enquiries, receipting and assisting our sales staff.” While Winnie gets the Certificate II in Business and the work experience, Century21 gets her skills in the office as well as ongoing support from STEPS. “I would highly recommend a school-based traineeship to anyone that may consider doing one,” Ms Dixon says.

Jason’s long service valued https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/jasons-long-service-valued/ Wed, 28 Jul 2010 01:15:44 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/group/?p=5820 For Jason, working as a horticulturalist at the Noosa Botanical Gardens is a dream job.

Working in the beautiful outdoors, in one of Australia’s top tourist destinations, Jason knows when he’s on a winner. Recently, the Sunshine Coast Regional Council officially recognised Jason’s 10 years of service, as a loyal, trusted and well-performed employee.

With the assistance of STEPS, Jason who has Down Syndrome, secured a permanent part-time position at the gardens 10 years ago, following two years of work experience. Jason, 30, works four hours every Thursday at the botanical gardens with some support from the STEPS team in Noosa, who currently assist more than 70 clients within the region. “I really enjoy my job,” Mr Ward said. “My role includes general maintenance of the gardens, mowing, planting, mulching, trimming, blowing leaves with the blower, whipper-snippering and even painting seats.”

Mr Ward’s mother and carer Kim says Jason’s position with council has been so rewarding. To celebrate his 10 years of employment, the Council presented him with a certificate and gift voucher in front of his colleagues at a ceremony held in the garden’s amphitheatre. “It was a happy day for all of us,” said Kim. “Jason has an extra chromosome, which means he is intellectually impaired,” she said. “Everyday things that we do and take for granted are tasks for him. His fine and gross motor skills are affected and speech is limited, he is however very healthy and happy. “Jason’s favourite role is mowing and whipper snippering, he has a passion for loud noise.”

The site manager at STEPS’s Noosa Heads office, Darren, said Jason’s success at the botanical gardens was aided through STEPS’ person centred planning and mentoring program. “Jason has been a STEPS participant for 12 years now,” Darren said. “STEPS helped Jason gain his job with the council, and for four hours every Thursday morning he receives on-the-job support from a dedicated Employment Pathway Mentor. “STEPS Noosa assists Jason with filling in his timesheet, maintaining the lawn mower, mowing lawns, using the whipper-snipper, using the motorised leaf blower and other general duties as required by the staff at the Noosa Botanical Gardens,” he said. “STEPS also assists Jason to access suitable equipment to perform his duties and negotiate issues with his employer.”

For people with disabilities who are keen to find a job or contribute to the community, the support STEPS offers can be invaluable in making that difficult first big step into employment. For Jason, that first step has led him down a path of 10 years of continuous employment in a job he loves.

All over Australia, volunteers are  making enormous contributions to  organisations of all types, and STEPS’ Gin Gin office is a good example. For Amanda, giving her time at the STEPS office is empowering, and creating hope for the future, not only for herself, but for those she assists in her administration and training role. She said volunteering is proving to be a vital part of her rebuilding confidence after, due to ill health, she was forced to resign from a job she had held for 25 years.

“The feeling of loss and uselessness was almost overwhelming after having a full, busy and active life,” said Amanda, reflecting on her life before volunteering. “Someone told me about STEPS and the service they provide in the community, so I went along hoping I could find the much needed confidence and self esteem to create a new life. The future is looking a lot brighter. With new skills under my belt and with the backup of STEPS’ staff – who have been a life saver – I see employment in the future.”

Sue Ellsum, another volunteer at the STEPS office has assisted Amanda update her computer skills. Together they continue to help many Gin Gin locals.

In August Marayke will compete in both the International Paralympic Swimming Championships in Holland, and two weeks later, the International Triathlon Championships in Hungary.

Marayke, who works as STEPS Graduate Employment Consultant, has represented Australia in three Paralympic Games, winning silver and two bronze in swimming events. As part of her preparation for the upcoming international swimming titles in Holland, Marayke competed in several triathlons to introduce some variety into her training.

After the Queensland State Triathlon championships in Redcliffe, it came to Marayke’s attention that her time qualified her for the world triathlon championships. An enquiry to Triathlon Australia confirmed her finding, and now Marayke is set to become Australia’s first female paratriathlete to represent Australia. “My competing in the triathlon is interesting because it’s all about accepting disability, and adapting and making things work,” said Marayke, who also has her sights on competing in a similar event in future paralympics.

“An able bodied triathlete just has a bike, but I have this huge three-wheeled hand cycle which weighs 15 kg (for the bike leg of the race), and this other huge racing chair.” As part of the triathlon Marayke said she is looking forward to swimming in the River Danube during the Hungarian Autumn, and then cycling through the rich traditional cityscape of Budapest.

At the International Swimming Championships held during August, Marayke will be representing Australia in three races, after qualifying in the Australian titles held during March. She said she’s expecting to receive plenty of encouragement. “I have so many relatives in Holland I couldn’t even count them,” she said. “Thanks to the wonders of Facebook, many seem to be finding out about my competing in Eindhoven … my Mum’s cousin lives about 20 minutes down the road from the venue. So I’m expecting plenty of family to watch my races, and I’ve got a great place to stay.”

Every day is United Nations for Tony https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/every-day-is-united-nations-for-tony/ Sun, 04 Jul 2010 01:14:08 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/group/?p=5824 As a bus driver for Federal Backpackers in Bundaberg, every day is like a day at the United Nations.

The position, which STEPS helped him to secure after he completed a two day work trial, has proven ideal for the 53-year-old, who previously struggled to gain employment due to a spinal injury. Tony now buses backpackers to and from local farms, where many undertake seasonal work. “The job is terrific,” said Tony. “I like the people and get to meet lots of backpackers from all over the world.”

“Tony is just great,” said Belinda Harlick, Federal’s office manager. “He fits in well and we can always rely on him.” Kathy Zarins from STEPS worked with Tony to determine possible employment pathways. After approaching a number of local backpackers she was able to secure two interviews for Tony. Just over six months ago he started with Federal, and hasn’t looked back. “A wage subsidy agreement was set up for his training in the role and a new career,” said Kathy. “He is continuing his employment  and Federal Backpackers are very satisfied with his abilities, responsible attitude and dedication.”

Program receives a ‘stamp’ of approval https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/program-receives-a-stamp-of-approval/ Wed, 05 May 2010 01:24:13 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/group/?p=5811 Now working in a traineeship with his host employer Australia Post, Grant has given CADET’s Indigenous Program a huge ‘stamp’ of approval.

As a mature aged gentleman, Grant has endured unstable employment for most of his life. The instability looked set to continue until Grant joined the Indigenous Program in September last year and he was given the opportunity to undertake a Traineeship in Certificate III Transport and Logistics working with Australia Post.

Grant has gained considerable knowledge in his short time with Australia Post and the support he has received from his host manager, colleagues and CADET is invaluable. CADET share Grant’s enthusiasm, and are impressed with his progress, currently considering him for further training in management. Grant is one of many participants of the CADET Indigenous Program which has operated over the past four years. These programs have been very successful with two thirds of participants breaking through vocational and nonvocational barriers, enabling them to sustain long-term employment.

Small changes open big doors https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/small-changes-open-big-doors/ Wed, 28 Apr 2010 01:37:59 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/group/?p=5780 To most, work is just a necessity and something people have to do, but for Scott, Morveen  and Stephanie meaningful employment is the source of a great deal of satisfaction and, more importantly, freedom.

As employees with disabilities, the threes Job Access program and some supportive employers they are reaching those goals.

Thanks to the support offered by STEPS, Scott, Morveen and Stephanie’s employers have sought and obtained financial help to create safer and more accessible workplaces. Scott’s employer, Superior Pak, and Morveen and Stephanie’s employer, YMCA Bundaberg, received Job Access funding as a result of applications made by STEPS on their behalf and the money they received forms part of the $100,000 received by Bundaberg business in the past year.

“I have been legally deaf since I was three years old after I contracted HIB meningitis,” Scott said. The 22-year-old is trade qualified and is currently working as a spray painter with Superior Pak, a manufacturer of waste management equipment in North Bundaberg. “I got the job at Superior Pak through my dad, Peter, who has worked there for more than five years,” he said. “When I had finished my apprenticeship in January 2009, dad asked the plant manager, Paul Morgan, if there were any jobs available. Paul asked for my resume and for me to come out and work for a day and then he put me on a 13-week probation.

“I’ve been working there since the start of the year and I’m doing 38 hours a week now. I love the money and the working environment.” While Scott’s skills were enough to qualify him to do the work, his hearing disability would have presented a few problems in the workplace without the modifications made by Superior Pak through the Job Access funding. Paul contacted STEPS to seek assistance with an application for funding from Job Access and was awarded close to $20,000 to spend on workplace improvements. They have installed movement sensors on a number of the doorways where forklifts are usedScott said. In addition, Superior Pak staff will soon be undertaking Auslan Language training so they will be able to communicate more effectively with Scott.

For Morveen and Stephanie, who both have Spina Bifida and are wheelchair bound, the money from Job Access has allowed their employer to create a work environment that most people would take for granted. Simple things like ramps now allow the administration assistants to access areas that they would otherwise be unable to in a wheelchair. “I started with STEPS more than 12 months ago and have been at YMCA since January 18,” Morveen, 49, said. “The new automatic doors have been wonderful. They have all made my job and accessing my job a lot easier – particularly when it’s raining. “People need to be in the workforce and it really does make life that little bit easier. It’s encouraging that we are getting this support so we can support ourselves.”

Stephanie has been working at the YMCA for close to five months now and the improvements have made a huge difference to her working life. “I’m very happy because I can now use items that most people take for granted,” she said. “Even having the hand rails in the toilets makes a world of difference. The new automatic doors are easier to use as I don’t have to work the door to open it and then manoeuvre to get inside the building. “I would encourage all other companies to take these kinds of steps…they do make the world of difference.”

Lindsay’s sparking again https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/lindsays-sparking-again/ Sat, 24 Apr 2010 01:36:19 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/group/?p=5787 “People around me say I have got the spark back again,” says Lindsay Baker who recently started work as a retail sales assistant with Hervey Bay Auto Parts. “STEPS not only found me a job, they helped me find myself again.”

Lindsay was 18 months off work with a back injury and was afraid of being “pensioned off at 50”. “After having worked all my life it was a shock to the system to have to say I couldn’t work and that took a while to accept. I wanted to prove the doctors wrong and prove to myself that I could get back into the workforce,” he says.

After the rehabilitation that followed his accident, he faced the daunting prospect of finding a job with hours and conditions that he could manage, but he was keen to work, and after struggling through various job agencies, finally found his way to STEPS.

“I was still confident after the accident but after 30 or 40 interviews I was getting worn down and it all got on top of me,” he says. “I was doing a computer course and applying for jobs that I thought I could do but realistically I couldn’t.” He visited his STEPS consultant regularly, and believes he has been well-matched with his work at Hervey Bay Auto Parts, a small family owned business.

He says that “after calling in for a chat, away we went” – and he’s now working eight hours a week. “I thought of auto parts as I have a mechanical background but I’ve been out of the trade for more than 20 years which is far too long to get back in,” he says. “I am still getting familiar with all the new products but it is coming back to me. I’m working on stock and stock rotation.”

Lindsay said as well as having something he looks forward to doing, he has also got his mind working again and with the help of STEPS, he has also come to understand and accept his limits in working hours and the pitfalls of pushing his pain barriers. “The backup from STEPS is fantastic. This is a lifesaver to me. I’ve gone from lowest of low to thinking about work the next morning when I go to bed,” he says. “I am really excited by this opportunity and I’m loving it. STEPS has been a big help to me.”

A great asset to Alice Springs: Izzy what! https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/a-great-asset-to-alice-springs-izzy-what/ Wed, 21 Apr 2010 01:28:06 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/group/?p=5804 Izzy Dak … a memorable name, but most people remember Izzy for his smile and positive, can-do attitude.

With over 11 years experience working with the underprivileged, Izzy signed up with STEPS’s employment program last year.

With STEPS’ help he landed an ideal job, suited to his background and passion – People Coordinator at the local branch of an international charity. Working 27 hours a week, Izzy was responsible for finding volunteers to assist in nine programs. Although he has since moved on from that job, Izzy voluntarily works with people on the streets, often seven times a week. He assists with counseling, feeding, cleaning clothes and finding suitable accommodation.

“Alice Springs suffers a great lack of accommodation for anyone down on their luck. I’ve been in their situation and know how hard it is to make a trusting relationship with peers.” Last year, Izzy was awarded the “Out There” award by the Alice Springs Mayor for his volunteer work, being nominated by several organisations in town. “I do have a disability which does not inhibit my work in any way,” said Izzy. “I alter every situation to my ability. Some are harder to alter than others, but determination gets me there. “It’s thanks to the people at STEPS that make the difference of wanting to work or feeling sorry for oneself because of a disability.”

New office and top performances at Townsville https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/new-office-and-top-performances-at-townsville/ https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/new-office-and-top-performances-at-townsville/#respond Tue, 19 Jan 2010 15:24:49 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/group/?p=6624 With a shimmy, and flowing hand movements STEPS in Townsville has danced its way into a “beautiful” new office, five-star performance and innovative new program.

In September, the two STEPS offices of Aitkenvale and Townsville both moved to a combined location on Ross River Road in Aitkenvale. The office is located on a major road, and conveniently located near Centrelink and the major bus route.

STEPS Training and Community Services also have their own space within the office, located on what locals refer to as “the golden mile” where businesses enjoy high visibility from passing traffic.

The office move corresponded with both offices receiving a five-star rating from the Australian Government, indicating the highest level of performance and service. Branch Manager, Joanne Wittmaack decided to celebrate with a little multiculturalism.

“We celebrated by having a team building experience, with an Indian dancing instructor coming to our office to teach us the “Bollywood” style of dancing and to assist us to embrace multiculturalism,” said Joanne.
“We learned that we aren’t as flexible as we thought. But the team embraced the fun side of the activity. Taking your job seriously is not about taking yourself seriously – it’s important to laugh and enjoy yourself along the way.”

Considering and embracing multiculturalism is an important factor in building community, and in September Joanne spoke on the subject at the International Diversity and Unity Conference in Townsville.

“This gave STEPS the opportunity to speak in a public forum regarding our inclusive practices,” said Joanne, who took quite a few questions from the audience after her address.

“This needed a collaborative approach and many thanks to all staff, particularly to Heather who worked tirelessly to bring this all together. It should bring about successful and valuable training for our job seekers,” said Joanne who quoted Aristotle to support the philosophy of the new program:
“Tell me and I will forget. Show me and I will remember. Involve me and I will understand.”

Porterble Cleaning and STEPS: 10 Stars https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/porterble-cleaning-and-staps-10-stars/ https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/porterble-cleaning-and-staps-10-stars/#respond Wed, 13 Jan 2010 14:48:56 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/group/?p=6622 Imagine working surrounded by leafy gardens and elegant palms. Or tackling disgusting A Current-Affair-style cleanups after a terrible tenant leaves?

These are just a couple of the types of contracts undertaken by Bowen’s Porterble Cleaning Service, all with an eye-for-detail and applying old-fashioned elbow-grease.

STEPS Bowen has developed a strong working relationship with Porterble Cleaning Service, recently placing three clients in suitable work with this reputable local employer. Porterble Cleaning is a supportive employer, demonstrated by their fl exibility in rostering clients according to their capabilities.

Joadi Bartlett of Porterble Cleaning says her greatest reservation as an employer was taking on clients with known disabilities and how her business clients would react. “I hoped that it would be a positive reaction but until they are in the job and working you never know,” said Joadi, who said she’s encountered only positive responses.

“I am very happy with the staff that I have received from STEPS. They seem to have a positive approach to their job because they really want to work.”

Of the on-the-job support offered by STEPS, Joadi says: “It has been great. It is comforting to know that if we need help, STEPS are there providing support as needed. As a business we also know that we are giving back to the community of Bowen, providing employment opportunities for people who are facing some real challenges.”

Kathy is a keen worker with Porterble Cleaning. She moved to Bowen from interstate, looking for a change after a difficult point in her life. On her first appointment with her STEPS Employment Consultant, suffering severe depression, she cried through the whole appointment.
“I was a wreck. There was so much going on in my life,” she said. After stabilising her medication with her doctor, sorting through emergency accommodation and establishing some focus, she began with Porterble Cleaning Service, very nervously.

“It had been a long time since I’d been in an interview, or any sort of work, but STEPS was there and made me feel comfortable. When I found out I had the job I was on cloud nine!

“Right now, I feel invigorated and alive. It is an absolute privilege when clients specifically ask for me to be on their job, because they like what I do. I love working in this team… its like being in a family.”

Chantelle’s the best person for the job! https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/chantelle-the-best-person-for-the-job/ https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/chantelle-the-best-person-for-the-job/#respond Tue, 05 Jan 2010 23:43:10 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/group/?p=6620 Chantelle was over the moon when she was appointed as project co-ordinator for Disability Action Week and International Day of People with Disability in July.

Chantelle has been employed by Best Choice Bookkeeping, a great supporter of the Disability Network, on a six month contract to fulfil these roles and works from STEPS Employment. This ensures her Employment Consultant is on hand to offer work-place assistance and mentoring.

“I was interviewed in the morning and was told I had the job that afternoon,” Chantelle said. “It was very exciting.”

Chantelle was kept busy organising events throughout Bundaberg as part of Disability Action Week. She has muscular dystrophy, a disease she has lived with her whole life, but do not think for a minute that has slowed her down. An avid horse enthusiast, she loves to get out and ride in her buggy and has been appointed the secretary of the Bundaberg Harness Club.

STEPS Employment Consultant Evelyn Thompson said Chantelle was chosen from a large selection as the best person for the job. “She was employed on her merits,” Evelyn said.

“Being able to employ someone with a disability is so empowering for them as well. Employers soon realise that there is so much support available from both local services and government.”

For Chantelle to undertake her role, her work station has been set up with special voice recognition software and appropriate computer equipment.

Lori is ‘hungry’ for work in Hervey Bay https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/lori-is-hungry-for-work-in-hervey-bay/ Tue, 26 May 2009 04:29:24 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/group/?p=6616 Next time you have lunch at Hungry Jacks in Hervey Bay say a big ‘hi’ to Lori Henderson who started her new job in May.

Every fortnight Lori had been diligently attending her job search appointments with her STEPS Employment Consultant Rachael Finn, but just wasn’t having any luck in securing work.

The perfect job finally arose at Hungry Jacks Hervey Bay when the manager Steven Reid agreed to STEPS Employment putting candidates forward for the Dining Room Cleaner position.

Marketer, Fiona Baxter, asked all of the Employment Consultants for referrals, and as a result, seven resumes were submitted for the position. Out of those seven resumes Steven chose just Lori to interview.

Lori’s Employment Consultant Rachael supported her at the interview and she was offered the job on the spot.

Lori does a wonderful job of keeping the dining area free of spills, crumbs and rubbish. She also looks fantastic in the Hungry Jacks uniform and is a credit to her employer as she looks happy in her work and is always busy.

Hungry Jacks’ Hervey Bay Manager Steven and his staff should be commended for being so supportive and welcoming of Lori. Thanks also to Rachael for providing so much job support to ensure Lori’s transition into work was stress-free.

Three weeks down the track, Lori is working every weekday during the busy lunch period with minimal support.

Well done Lori and thank you Hungry Jacks. Not only have you created a job for one of our participants, you are helping her work toward independence and a brighter future.

Coaching Legend Speaks for STEPS https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/coaching-legend-speaks-for-steps/ Wed, 13 May 2009 15:51:19 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/group/?p=6489 On Friday 8 May, business people, community leaders and educators gathered for the second STEPS breakfast featuring the nationally renowned rugby league coach Wayne Bennett.

After 21 years of coaching the Brisbane Broncos, the multi-premiership winning coach is now in charge of St George- Illawarra hence the change of shirt colour.

Besides engaging a wide range of people from the Townsville community, the breakfast, held at the stately Rydges Southbank Townsville, served several purposes for STEPS. The merger between Impact Employment and STEPS was announced, with many of Impact’s long-term employers present. The event also gave STEPS the opportunity to announce its 20th anniversary to the Townsville community.

At the end of the event John Conway, General Manager of Employment, launched STEPS Employer Equity Group, presenting well deserved inaugural memberships to The Outback Pie Co. and Serco Sodexo Defence Services.

Local radio personality Jude Hilberts hosted the event superbly. Milo Gaffney, Director of The Outback Pie Co., and last years Townsville Young Business Person of the Year, addressed the crowd, highlighting why he now employs 20 percent of his workforce from STEPS. His address was highly thoughtful and compelling.

Wayne Bennett spoke candidly on the subject of communication, and its importance within any team environment whether sporting or businesses. He also challenged those in attendance to forsake selfish attitudes and work together for a more inclusive society, including employing people with disability. His address was hard-hitting, but roundly applauded for its honesty.

Thank you to all those who contributed to the success of the morning.

20/20 cricket – STEPS style https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/news/2020-cricket-steps-style/ Sat, 25 Apr 2009 01:28:52 +0000 https://www.stepsgroup.com.au/group/?p=6604 STEPS Bundaberg’s inaugural cricket day featured two games of cricket, a huge sausage sizzle and two spectacular catches.

The day, organised as part of STEPS 20th anniversary and the 20 Jobs in 20 Days campaign, was held in March at Kendall Flats and attended by STEPS employees, participants and employers. Around 70-80 people attended. The cricket spectacular featured a ‘serious’ game between the staff of Lifeline and the staff of Bee Mart Fruit and Vegetable, both generous and long-standing employers of STEPS’ participants. A second game including STEPS staff and participants was more of a ‘hit and giggle’.

Local LNP member Jack Dempsey bowled the first over of the game between Lifeline and Bee Mart. participant Bill pulled off an amazing reflex catch close to
the wicket, and participant Michael took a diving outfield catch to dismiss STEPS Sales Consultant Geoff Dettl. Chris, a visually impaired participant, amazed all present with his ability  to hit the belled cricket ball.

Special mention should also go to participant t let a ball get past him and due to his fielding, his white team shirt was soon covered in green grass stains. The day finished with a sausage sizzle, and the draw of a raffle featuring a number of prizes including two autographed cricket one featuring Australian, Indian and Sri Lankan players the other  Queensland players.

Event organiser and STEPS Employment Consultant, Evelyn Thompson, thanked the sponsors of the day, including  Cricket Australia, the Queensland Bulls, Blind Cricket Australia, s Kepnock Butcher, Brumbys Bakery, Bargara Golf Shop, Bundaberg Juice and Cornetts IGA, just to name a few.

Due to the success of the Cricket Day, a lawn bowls day is being planned for July or August.
