20/20 cricket – STEPS style

STEPS Bundaberg’s inaugural cricket day featured two games of cricket, a huge sausage sizzle and two spectacular catches.

The day, organised as part of STEPS 20th anniversary and the 20 Jobs in 20 Days campaign, was held in March at Kendall Flats and attended by STEPS employees, participants and employers. Around 70-80 people attended. The cricket spectacular featured a ‘serious’ game between the staff of Lifeline and the staff of Bee Mart Fruit and Vegetable, both generous and long-standing employers of STEPS’ participants. A second game including STEPS staff and participants was more of a ‘hit and giggle’.

Local LNP member Jack Dempsey bowled the first over of the game between Lifeline and Bee Mart. participant Bill pulled off an amazing reflex catch close to
the wicket, and participant Michael took a diving outfield catch to dismiss STEPS Sales Consultant Geoff Dettl. Chris, a visually impaired participant, amazed all present with his ability  to hit the belled cricket ball.

Special mention should also go to participant t let a ball get past him and due to his fielding, his white team shirt was soon covered in green grass stains. The day finished with a sausage sizzle, and the draw of a raffle featuring a number of prizes including two autographed cricket one featuring Australian, Indian and Sri Lankan players the other  Queensland players.

Event organiser and STEPS Employment Consultant, Evelyn Thompson, thanked the sponsors of the day, including  Cricket Australia, the Queensland Bulls, Blind Cricket Australia, s Kepnock Butcher, Brumbys Bakery, Bargara Golf Shop, Bundaberg Juice and Cornetts IGA, just to name a few.

Due to the success of the Cricket Day, a lawn bowls day is being planned for July or August.
