How STEPS is Helping the Sunshine Coast access the NDIS

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) was rolled out on the Sunshine Coast earlier this year and the new funding model is changing the landscape for people living with disability across the nation.

The NDIS provides all Australians under the age of 65 who have disability with the reasonable and necessary supports they need to live an enriched life.

There’s a lot of new NDIS information to navigate for participants, and when you’re busy being a parent or carer, getting the time to get a grip on the new terminology and how it all works can be hard.

STEPS Community Services have a team of Support Coordinators dedicated to helping you get the most out of your NDIS plan. Through their holistic approach, they’re there to help take the pressure off.

STEPS Chief Executive Officer Kerry Staines says the NDIS is a revolutionary new scheme for Australians with a disability, their families and carers.

“STEPS are helping people to navigate through the web of information. We’re working closely with our customers and families, showing them the tools and supports available to help them confidently achieve a life of greater independence based around individual needs and choices,” Kerry said.

Based in Maroochydore, STEPS Specialist Support Coordinator Chelsea Dunne works with families and individuals to help them work through their NDIS questions and help demystify the process.

“We really take the time to get to know our participants, we meet with them so we can put a ‘face to the name’ and understand what their needs and goals are,” Chelsea said.

“It’s all about ‘their choice and their control’, we’re here to help link participants to service providers for all aspects of their day-to-day living.

“We also believe that getting to know the service providers is just as important, so we know we are recommending providers that we can trust, that will be the best fit for the participants’ needs.

“There is a huge sense of satisfaction in being able to get to know a participant, listen to their story, help them to link in with services and the community, and watch them flourish.”

STEPS have an expert and friendly team of Support Coordinators based on the Sunshine Coast, so for Specialist Support Coordination, One-on-one or Group Support, assistance in Behaviour Management Planning and ASD Specialist Support – STEPS can help.

STEPS Community Services have more than 30 years’ experience in the disability sector. From advice and planning to service provision, or even just a chat, STEPS can help every step of the way to ensure you get the most out of your NDIS package and get on with living your best life.
