Job seeker success – Darryl
This good news story shows that community organisations working together can make a huge difference in people’s lives.
When we first met 53-year-old Daryl his one goal in life was to be a famous rock star. He had been diagnosed with Chronic Schizophrenia in his mid-20s, and had spent his adult life in and out of mental health facilities.
Before his diagnosis, Daryl was working towards becoming a trade qualified electrician, however he had been unemployed for over 30 years while receiving ongoing treatment from Wide Bay Integrated Mental Health Service for Psychotherapy and Medication to manage his condition.
His aging parents have provided great support throughout his life with help from assisted living. Daryl has also enjoyed strong social support from Bridges Recovery Services.
While we unfortunately couldn’t help Daryl become a rock star, but we did begin looking for great employment alternatives for him.
Now, thanks to a combined effort between Wide Bay Integrated Mental Health Services and STEPS Group Australia, Daryl now has paid employment plus he’s successfully working in two separate job roles!
A Merchandising Officer in the Bundaberg and Bargara area, he also works as a Commercial Cleaner and has had excellent feedback about his performance and attention to detail.
Daryl may not have achieved his dream role as a rock star but he’s definitely a STAR in our eyes. Well done, Daryl!!
